Blown Serpentine belt

As the title says. Early in the year when de winterizing the boat as I was putting the serpentine belt back on I thought I prob should get a spare. Well I didn’t and sure enough I grenaded mine. Don’t know why but I was pulling the kids on a tube ( not the reason why, haha) and the people in back heard a ticking noise and then it was gone. Then I heard the exhaust note change, I assume from no water going through the exhaust anymore. Looked at gauges and no charging and temp going up. Luckily we were close to the cabin and my wife’s cousins are next door and she can whistle really loud and came to tow us in. I pulled the impeller and 3 one hour round trips later got the right belt and was up and running again. Moral of story go buy an extra belt. 5 min to change on the lake and will keep u going. Also once I was in cell service I googled the part number and 3 diff sites had the same belt number and so I ordered that one and it was too short. GET A SPARE

I went through that last year. Didn't break but was getting loose and slipping on the pulleys. I tried to get a local one and couldn't find one that worked. Ended up ordering the PCM one. I do keep the old on in the boat however. Glad you found one that worked.

Yep, I keep an extra belt in my boat along with a took kit and some other parts...seen too many threads where people get stranded in middle of the lake and end up loosing a weekend or part of their vacation over something simple and easy IF you had what you needed. So keep a nice kit in the boat....and if I go somewhere further away for a weekend or longer, I have another toolbox with even more parts/tools....as well as a spare prop.

I keep one in my boat tool kit.

I put a new one on this year because the old one had developed a small squeak. The new one squeaks way more. Has anyone tried any belt conditioner or dressing?

Make sure you’ve got it tight enough. In my experience they speak more when loose.

Merc idler and tensioners are pretty notoriously noisy as well and pretty cheap to replace. One thing you can do to test if its belt vs pulley is spritz the belt with a LITTLE water from a spray bottle while running. If noise goes away its belt. If noise stays then its pulleys.
Gator back belts are a lot quieter if theres a little but of pulley alignment issue, they are just hard to find and often you have to order them. Dayco belts seem to be noisy in my experience.
Belt dressing does work, but it's only a bandaid and eventually is will start making noise again.
