Engine water Circulating Pump Part number

On a different thread I brought up a leak I had and Chpthril commented that most likely my engine water circulating pump was worn out and leaking and needs to be replaced. After looking at some stuff I felt like he was exactly right. So I pulled it. The Boat is a 1999 21v has a Mercrury MIE 350 Mag MPI SKI engine in it serial # 0L390830

Pulling it wasn’t that hard but I do have a couple questions and wondering if anyone has some answers.

    1) I have a few of the engine diagrams but can’t for the life of me find one that has the part number of this part?? Anyone know of the part number

    2) would y’all get a new pulley for it or try to take this one off? Not the prettiest pulley but it does work, thoughts? Is it just the bolts holding it or is it also pressed on?

    3) I couldn’t get the rubber hose off of the pump so I unhooked it from the plastic part. Do I just buy a new hose and get a normal hose clamp for it (the clamp I took off of the other end was a different kind of clamp not a normal hose clamp that is shown but a normal hose clamp should work right?)

    4) Any advice on putting it back together or things to be careful with. Or anything I should do while I have it apart? Or just put it back together nothing else to do or check or replace while I got it apart?

See photos below Thanks in advance for all the help guys!

One more question I got a couple nicks in the vinyl anything I can put on these to keep them from getting worse? Anyone use clear Tear Aid? Any other ideas? Or just gonna have to be careful around these spots.

And a few pics from or last couple trips at Possum Kingdom Lake and Table Rock because I know everyone likes pictures (including myself)

Awesome I am saving that website to my favorites. I saw that diagram before but wasn’t sure if that was it and always like to get the experts opinions

Do you think I should also purchase a new pulley?

Head over to your local autoparts house and just match the pump up. Start with mid 90's chevy trucks. Probably cost $30-40 bucks. reuse the pulley. Those 4 bolts hold it on. It might stick a bit on the shaft due to years of build up, but should come off with a bit of finesse. Use standard hose clamps. Stainless steel if you can find them. Now that the pump is off you can take a long skinny tool (screwdriver) to reach inside the hose and seperate it from the pump. If the hose is not to soft, reuse it. Otherwise your partshouse should be able to match it up and cut you a piece of new hose. When it goes back together just make sure you clean the old sealer off, either gasket or silicone. The metal should be shiny clean on both the block and pump with no oil, grease or fingerprints. Make sure your new pump comes with a gasket. If it doesn't then get a tube of red RTV silicone. Put a 3/16" to 1/4" bead of RTV on the engine block then attach the pump. I like to let RTV dry overnight before putting water to it.

Doesn't look like your family is having any fun at all.

I have used tare aid in the past, and has worked well for me. it dose discolor over time but stops the from getting worse.
If you haven't changed the belt might be a good time to do that also. You can paint the pully if it bothers you.

Everyone nailed the water pump replacement.

One thing for your vinyl. We use an upholstery company that mix up a liquid vinyl product that can be put over small tears like that. They color match it as well. I dont k omw the name of the product they use or who might do it in your area. The name of the company that does it locally is called McDowells here in Boise. I'm sure they would at least tell you which product they use if you called
The repairs seem to come out good and stand up to UV. I've found that getting the boat in good light helps the tech that does the work to get a good color match as well.

Hopefully someone in your area provides this service as well.

Ya we have no fun on the boat

                Thanks for the tips.

The pulley color doesn’t bother me but we kept chewing belts up and the local Marine mechanic suggested that if my pulleys were worn it might be tearing up the belts. So I changed out the tensioner pulley, raw water pump pulley and the other one above the alternator (I believe it’s just a idler pulley?) any way I didn’t change out the alternator, crank case or this pulley because they were more expensive and honestly made me a little more nervous to take off since I thought there was more to getting them of. I know this is a smooth pulley so I don’t think it would chew my belt up but that was my concern.

Would a pump for a car be the same as this one for the boat as long as it all matched up? The marine specific doesn’t have anything different?

I might try tear aid. The boat isn’t perfect cosmetically but let’s be honest I have 4 little ones it ain’t gonna be perfect. I just don’t want the holes to get bigger. I’ll be honest I don’t know how you guys do it with the newer boats and kids. We just got the 5 seat bases re upholstered in the back of the boat and it looks a lot better than it did but now I’m all over everyone to take care of it. I can’t imagine how crazy I would be with a newer nicer boat.

My understanding is there are a few differences with a marine circ pump and an automotive water pump. Boats have SS backing plates and Bronze bushings for salt water operation. As long as you stay in fresh water or have a closed loop cooling system an automotive version should work fine. There is further discussion about wether the vanes are different based on different water volumes, but that goes beyond my levels. I would guess rotation direction is the same?

Maybe this TSB will help diagnose your belt issue?

This is probably true. I ran a GM pump on my old 21v with no heating issues so I believe it circulated water just fine. I'm not sure why they would choose to run a SS backing plate. As most of us can attest they always fail at the shaft seal, as is very evident in the OP's picture. I double any backing plate would ever fail before the shaft seal fails, hence the reason they built them with the weep hole.

The internal impeller is stainless, pump is denoted marine by stainless cover plate. Also, don't use the sierra model, there's a casting relief in the correct pump that is not in the Sierra pump and it won't clearance one of the timing cover bolts. Had a customer figure that one out on his own...

Replace your belt and the idler pulley as well as the adjusting pulley while its out too.

Ive always been under the impression that there is a difference in the bearings and how the shaft is sealer. In an automotive pump, the bearings are lubed by the antifreeze. In a marine pump, they are a permanent bearing and not lubed, as there is no lube in the raw lake water.

I’ll be safe and buy a marine one. The good news is when you just have to fix one or two things at a time the hit isn’t all that bad. Compared to replacing multiple things at once.
