    Go!
I think I would find a nice, clean, bone stock old 2000+ 23v and build it out how I want. Full interior refit with a “traditional” v-drive layout. Custom helm. 454. MLA ballast. Samson Razor. No tower speakers.

I’m just not into the new boats. I guess I don’t see the value of 100k+ tow boats. That’s nearly 3x what I have in my boat and 4x what my buddy has in his 21v. I can’t see us having 3-4x more fun than we already do. We drop ‘em in, everybody rides and has fun. They both perform very respectable, both loaded and unloaded for slalom. They are clean, comfortable, and do everything we need and we’re never really worried about them either starting or getting dinged. They’re cheap to run, cheap to own, and cheap to fix in that rare event something fails. They’re easy to work on and easy to run. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate the new machines for all they’re tech and performance. I get it. I just don't desire it. I like the idea of the customization of and old boat. At least one for surfing. You could have 3 nice old boats for the price of one of the new WakeMarys. A 23v, a 22i, and a nice little flat bottom. Just an honest little 70mph boat.

Seriously though, I really want a flat. I drove the **** out of my buddy’s jet boat last week. It’s a blast. Something about 427 on a 12J in ‘72 CobraJet is aweful intoxicating. I want something just a little faster. Definitely a v-drive. Just fast enough to beat him every time.

Was there a correct answer to this quiz? Doesn’t matter. Slalom is coming back anyways.

X2 NICKYPOO! Well said. If money were no object I would have a newer boat but I am always impressed with our boats and I say the same thing to people as you have discussed here... if anything, we sometimes have more fun on our older boats I think due to the fact we aren't all that concerned with Murphys Law out there. Stuff happens in any boat... I would just be pissed if my 100K boat was having issues is all...

Sounds like you’re going to have about 60k wrapped up in a 35k boat?

I had a 24Ve and loved it. But man, more freeboard and a surf system is the cats behind.

Well, I’ve already got 35k wrapped up in an 18k boat now and I love it sooo...

My boating pleasure is derived from the experiences I have with it, not how much money someone will give me for it.

Ok guy. I get it. I like the old boats also.

Saying they’re “as good as” or “I prefer them to all these expensive boats” is really just a dig deep down at people that have nice boats. And I am not sure where that feeling comes from. But whatever. I am with you, the boating experience is all about the people and the times had on a said boat. Some guys just go out of their way to say new boats are stupid, outrageous, irresponsible...choose your rant.

There’s no denying that the new boats are awesome. They’re better in every way. Every single way—except affordability. Unfortunately, they’re very expensive and out of reach for most guys. Or....worse yet...they sometimes lead people to make poor financial decisions on occasion. That sucks.

BUT, they’re awesome. They’re a riot to use. They make incredible waves.

But the debate will always exist, and will originate from people who haven’t owned a new modern surf boat. It’s like people feel the need to defend their place, but it’s not necessary. We get it. We respect it! It’s ok!

I can appreciate and respect your desire for the older models, and the satisfaction you get from customizing an older boat Nickypoo. I mean that. However, your quote above is very similar to the reason I don't mind buying new. My boating pleasure is derived also from the experiences I have with it, not how much money I've spent on it. If it fits in my budget, I personally love some of the new technology and hull designs coming out. Again, nothing against your approach - I can appreciate both approaches.

Good points guys. I hear you. It’s not that I don’t like them or appreciate them, they’re just not for me. I know that kinda comes off like I’m hating on them or I’m just trying to defend old boats or whatever. I’m not. I should have worded that better but, after a few or so beers on a Friday night, that ended up kinda “ranty” and “douchey”. Well, not kinda. More like totally. Sorry about that. Money has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation. So, talking surf boats and what would be the ultimate surf boat and I guess for me it would be one that isn’t built to be a surf boat. Rather something that surfs really well that was never designed to. Kind of like the Rolls Royce Merlin. It was never designed to put out 4000hp but, if you know what you’re doing, you can make it do just that. There’s a romance to that.

I was in a ri257 this week. Has me really rethinking. A lot nicer than I expected. Huge wave and plenty of room for what I need.

I hear you on this. 5 years ago "me" wanted everything new and the best. Today I like taking older things and making them new again. Not sure I would change anything with regards to my boat, but elsewhere I've started to re-use, re-cycle and re-imagine things. Sometimes the project is the most fun. I love seeing the threads where guys re-furb a long lost Tige. I think those are awesome.

I hear that, I spent 4 days surfing behind an RI257 on Lake Norris, TN over Fathers Day this year. That wave is a blast for sure and has push for days. Not sure I would want a boat bigger than the 24ft I have now tho, would mean a new truck too.....that I do not need for anything else :-)

If you are going to spend that kind of money you may as well go try a G too. 23 or 25.

Been in both. Like the G but they are not that close in price. Not around here anyway. I actually like the Centurion’s wake better. Fit and finish G is better in my opinion. I would keep my RZX2 over the G23 just because of price.

I don't want to have to buy a new boat to be able to surf like @liamliam52 https://www.instagram.com/p/BlRpEjjl...-by=sammy_g_63 Behind a 2007 Malibu LSV with a Nauticurl suck gate! But if I had the money to spend I would either get a custom yacht with a surf system and helicopter landing pad or maybe just an RZX3.
If I'm not surfing, I'm making money to surf.

The older stuff is killer, but its not fair to compare to the new stuff in regards to automation, time to setup and ease of use IMO in regard to surfing. Can you have loads of fun and an amazing time running a 1985 Malibu Skier with a fly-high pole and gas cans filled with water in the rear ? Absolutely, ask me how I know. Personally, I long for the boat that makes things the easiest, is the most comfortable for my wife in all months, is the fastest to setup and makes the biggest wave. You know why? Because those things for me will tangibly translate. And by translate I mean more time to enjoy doing what I personally like the most and thats wake surfing and being on the water comfortable. Different stokes for different folks but I think the new stuff is amazing and hard to argue against if you want to spend the coin. Every year the bench mark jumps....... kinda cool to witness.
