    Prop question

    Hey all!

Don’t post much but I lurk and search a lot!

Normally I’d just search this question but I didn’t have a ton of Luck and prop info has so many specifics that I figured it was easier to just ask.

Had my 2003 21i for about three years now. Came with two props. One was a three blade that I assume was the factory prop and then the one in the pictures.

It’s always had this sort of weird quirk I’ve never been able to figure out and I’m wondering if it’s a prop problem or something else.

When under way, turning into rolling wake at full lock, just over an idle speed, almost every time it feels like the transmission “slips”. The prop feels like it free spins for the length of the rolling wave then kicks right back in. Only happens under those conditions.

So my question is, 1. Any ideas what this could be besides a prop issue? And 2. Is the prop pictured the right one for my boat and conditions?

75% wakeboarding. 25% cruising around. We hardly ever ski and we haven’t attempted wake surfing yet. Boat only ever gets out in Oklahoma. Around 700’ above sea level.

    Thanks!!!

IMO, I wont say its the wrong prop, but I feel its not the best prop. Looks to be 13 x 12.5 4 blade for 1:1 DD's boarding and surfing. Sounds like your prop is just taking a big gulp of air now and again under certain conditions. With that said, id be hesitant to buy $500 prop just yet to address this. Under some conditions, the prop is just going to catch some air and cavitate.

id want to check the trans fluid and may just service it if its been awhile.

That’s fair. It feels like that’s what’s happening. That there is a pocket of no resistance on it and it just spins free for a really brief second and then it’s fine. This is my first boat so I haven’t learned all he in’s and outs yet and this had me slightly worried.

Transmission is really smooth besides this. Never had a problem in and out of gears or any lurching. Was worth asking!

I’m not in a hurry to replace it, but if I was going to what prop should I look at? I’d love to learn to surf but as it’s my first boat ballasts systems scare me a bit and the combined expense of board and ballast seems significant. RF

Lets say for a minute that your anomaly is not prop related. Lets just say, whats a good prop for my boat for boarding and surfing. We have found the ACME 653 to do very well surging with some good ballast, does good boarding and can even allow you to run a ski coarse. Too aggressive for barefooting speeds.

In this scenario, I would wait until your use and ballast has exceeded the capabilities of this prop. This usually means slow hole shot, poor speed holding when surfing and boarding and lots of cavitating when loaded with ballast.

As noted, this prop may not be the best, but may not be completely wrong.

Works for me. Will just keep running it as is and look for ballast options moving forward!

I believe u prob had some cavitation as well. When we first got our boat I had it loaded up and was surfing we hit some rough water and my wife thought something was wrong when it cavitated and pulled back on the throttle right when is pumping and I hit the back of the boat. Rrrrr. But it does feel weird when it does it. But I def happens
