this is one reason I shopped tige for another boat. I don't think you would find offers like this on other forum boards.. could be wrong but this shows the tige family....
hoping to make it back home to boise sometime in the near future to meet free and glad the experts on here are trying to keep someone happy with the brand....
There are absolutely great guys on here, and with the exception of the drive on my boat, I have nothing but good to say about Tige on the whole. I’m happy with everything with the exception of my boat getting out of the hole when heavy, and maybe my expectations are set to high on that one and I do need to be put in my place by guys like Jason that know these boats far better than I do, and I think there are some flaws on the trailer, but that’s on boatmate and me for not finding a triple axle. Either way I have nothing but good to say about the people on this forum, I’ve met some of the guys, and talked to guys privately about a range of things, not to mention people trying to continually help me with my endless bitching. If I can figure this boat out, I’ll probably be a Tige fan for a long time, I’m guessing I wouldn’t have gotten half this far with Nautique or Disasterraft.
One question for you Zackdogg; if someone with enough knowledge was available to get in your boat on the water, spend some time in it and dial it in, would that change your negative views? Disclaimer; I am not that guy with enough knowledge... I am just curious.

Absolutely, and I would way, way, rather admit that I’m an idiot, which I am in plenty of cases, than have to spend $12k to fix this thing. I’ve said I love plenty about this boat, and Tige as a brand, a bunch of times. I’ve also said maybe I have to high of expectations, and if that’s the case, I will readily admit that. It could easily be that simple. Jason already has me second guessing my expectations, as I expected it to surf with full ballast and a half full crew, and some lead, which might be asking too much. I hear all these guys that are running 1500# of PnP and 1000# in lead and the only difference in boats is that drive. Hell, maybe jealousy is the source of all my frustration. Either way, I would absolutely, graciously, let someone show me that I don’t know how to set a boat up.
Zack, I’d still like to get you here and run our boats to compare them. I think it would help your decision a lot. Just throwing this out there... Jason is up here pretty often. Maybe we could arrange a Saturday where we all meet up and go through these boats. I bet it wouldn’t be too hard for him to bring a SC rzx to the party. I think it would be pretty cool to have three of the same boats with different running gear going head to head. Then you’d know for sure what you need to do.
I can tell you what the issue is and my opinion on what he should do but he wont want to here it.
He needs to run the boat the way its intended. He goes out with 10-15 people regularly, ditch the lead. Set the boat up correctly with the factory ballast. Lets check the prop and lets figure out whats going on. The motor being hurt is obviously a possibility but I doubt it. That boat is heavy, fill it with 3k full plus lead, and 12 people and then toss in some elevation and you have the makings of a boat that is going to feel sluggish. Use taps to your advantage, maybe you just need to spend a few hours with someone who can show you how to operate it to its max efficiency.
Running a 2-1 is going to feel like an extra 60ish lbs of torque across the entire band, the problem is its still a 16 so my numbers brain says its a waste of money. Going supercharged will kill resale unless you drop a brand new crate 575 from indmar in that thing and change the shaft out to the Sc shaft to account for the HP. Still will have a 16, and still wont squeeze your money back out of it.
Run it lighter and account for people weight or trade it in for something a year newer that can exceed factory weight at elevation. My money would be on letting me take you to the promise land and getting you out and into something that i can guarantee will work for you, But again, you are going to have to trust someone else which after this I could imagine might be hard.
This whole thing seems to be about how Tige went to a 2-1 and thus new it was a problem. Lets get the details right. The Asr was out before that and is nearly the same boat which was powered by a 1.5-1 reduction as well as just about every other MFG during that time frame. Tige went to the 2-1 because the technology and testing dictated it.
Nautique and MC were having success with the bigger boats where people were pushing the factory limits.... Tige just didnt want to be behind the market.

If we take a z3 out and I go with 13 people in it, I take weight out. Most of those 13 are sitting in the cabin and most of that will be in the rear half. The boats can only take soo much weight.

^^true story. As far as I know Indmar wasnt offering anyone a 2:1 option until after both PCM and Ilmor did it, which wasnt a bad thing because Indmar got to learn from others mistakes, like 1 1/8" prop shafts couldnt handle the torque. So as far as I know Tige and all the other boat manufacturer using the Raptor didnt get to pick 2:1s until 17. Pretty sure Supra has still opted to not run 2:1s with 440s and its just not an option.. Maybe as tool to move folks into the 575, or maybe Im just wrong. Dont see as many Supras as I do Tiges.
I’m gonna chime in as we run the exact same boat as Zack but at pretty much sea level.
Yes I run pnp, yes I run 900 lead, BUT I don’t have 10 plus people ussally only two. Heck the last couple times it’s just been me and a buddy, so the situation is a little different here. If we had all the extra people and a 15x12 prop on the boat there is no dam way we would get to speed. So with the extra people having a little less weight definitely helps.
Now thanks to Jason and the prop recommendations we have zero problems pushing as much weight as we want. We had full pnp, 900 lead, and 10 adults in the boat. We got to speed no problem. Now my only complaint that I shouldn’t complain about yet because I haven’t confirmed it yet is my regular side wave isn’t working normal. I’m not sure if the larger prop is making it harder to get desired list or my actuators are being screwy.
Don’t waste your money on trying to figure out a 2:1 install. Sell the boat if it’s that big of a deal.
I really wonder how big of a roll elevation plays into all this. The lake we normally run at is at 4200'. We have lakes as high as 6200', but I haven't had my rzx to any of them yet. While at Lake Mead last week I really paid attention to my power output. That lake is supposed to be at 1200'. I was expecting a big difference, but didn't really notice anything different. We almost always run with 9-10 people in the boat. I estimate our group of 9 at mead to be 1385 pounds. 3700 in regular ballast and I'll guess and say 400 in a bag in the surf locker. 5485 in people and water weight. No lead. We could surf at any speed we wanted. We needed to drain the PNP to cruise though. It would take about 30 seconds to get up to 30 mph with the PNP empty.
Selling and getting another boat may not be the wisest option if money is a concern. If you paid low 90's for this boat you probably got a pretty good deal on it. The cheapest 2016 on only inboards is $94k right now. Most are upper 90's and into the mid to upper 100's. I think putting in a 2:1 would really help your resale valve as it would make your boat so much more desirable. I think you could do better than 12k for a 2:1 swap. Maybe not. You'll get some of that back when you sell off the old parts and I bet the rest could be made up when you do sell the boat. I could easily see you breaking even or maybe getting ahead with the 2:1. No chance on that with a SC swap.
To sell yours and purchase a used boat with a 2:1 already in it would cost more. I don't think they were standard till 2018, with some random 2017 getting them. That may be wrong though. The cheapest 2017 I see is $109k. Doesn't say if it has a 2:1 or not. The 2018's are listing 2:1, but the lowest listed price is 120. On the 17-18's you'll also get the better tower and the larger touch screen.

The only thing that you are wrong about there, is that I won’t want to hear what you have to say. I do. I constantly use what you’ve written about wave setup as the gospel. I know you know these boats a hell of a lot better than I do. And I can take take criticism for what it is. I also like talking boats, cars, guns, and bikes, because those are my hobbies, and anything you can learn from someone else is extremely valuable. Even if I’m wrong.
If it’s as simple as I’m running too heavy, that’s a plenty easy fix, for me. I hear guys like Unstuck running as much, or more weight, at the exact same elevation as our home lake, where we struggle, but I guess that’s where the 2:1 would make the difference, and I have to decide if that’s worth the money to me. Maybe the answer is the swap, maybe it’s live with it as is, maybe it’s a new boat. I’m on the fence with all of them, and there are give and take with all of them.
I think I’m probably different from most where I run on a lot of different lakes, with elevations all over the place, and we are the only Tige with the guys we’re out with. We have a couple of G23s, a couple of MBs, a couple of centurions, and an Axis. Mine is the newest boat, mine is also the only one that has these struggles. And maybe that’s where my frustration with Tige actually lies, if I really think about the root of it. I have to think their testing procedure is pretty similar to mine. Hit different lakes, see what it does against different boats, and make adjustments to fix problems and beat the competition, at least that’s what it should be in my head. Maybe the tech wasn’t there for the 2:1 when the 16s came out, then that is what it is, and I’m wrong in thinking they should have run it. But I have a hard time believing they released this boat thinking it was what they say it was.
I could easily be missing something when setting my TAPs, that’s a definite possibility, but I’ve always gone by something you said which was use weight to make the size and TAPs to clean the wave up. Maybe I took that too literally. Our wave is plenty clean, but I think it lacks size, and it’s a 30 second struggle to get the last 1-2mph out of it.. if I could surf at 9, I could be there all day long..
Dude, I appreciate you taking the time to give me responses, even if it is to sell me a boat. I haven’t ruled that out, but I also hate to start over, even if it is the best move. When I say “I don’t know that I’ll buy a Tige again”, that’s just me being honest, I’m disappointed with my experience in their brand. But maybe that’s because I’m setting my boat up wrong, too. I’ll never buy a bran new boat, as I’m not going to be the one that takes the depreciation hit for just driving it off the lot. You know about what I paid for mine, and pretty well what I’m looking for, at this point. If you see something I might be interested in, feel free to let me know. If you take a different brand on a trade, that may also interest me. Either way it would have to be a hell of a deal. Knowing I could make this boat do what I want by doing that gear swap would make numbers pretty easy for me. I have everything else I need in this boat, for the most part.

I can tell you what our experience in elevation is. 400 is the lowest I’ve run, 6200 is the highest. 400-3000 feels pretty much the same, I don’t really see any difference in there.. our home lake is 4200, sounds like the exact same as yours. That’s where we start seeing some performance loss, but it’s fairly minimum, based on what it will do with weight, I would estimate 10-15% less weight performs about the same as lower elevations. We run on 2 lakes that are higher than that 1 at 5200, and 1 at 6200. 5200, we see probably another 15% loss of performance, with a 15x12 prop, we could only run about 30% ballast with 8 people on the boat, the majority of the people we women and kids, we weren’t very heavy, with a 15x11 prop, we can run like 60% ballast.. these numbers are for surf speeds.. anything above about 12mph, we have to run empty ballast. At 6200’ we can’t really run any ballast.. Trying to cross the lake with some waves, we had a hard time hitting 12-13mph with 6 people in the boat, 4 of which are light girls, 1 like 170lb guy, and me at 230. Maybe 1000lbs in people.
I’m with you on selling, which is part of the reason I say, if I have to sell, it would probably be to change brands. I think today, with a 2:1, my boat is probably $105k-ish??? Maybe $100k.. somewhere in there.. it’s probably a break even deal, right now, and I have a down payment and a year worth of payments behind me. With a 2:1, I could probably keep this boat for the next 5-8 years, unless something really badass comes out. The improvements, with the exception of being able to push weight, which hopefully the 2:1 would change, aren’t great enough to warrant $30k in my opinion. I have never folded my tower, so the fancier tower would be only for looks to me, and a bigger touch screen is pretty well “whatever” to me, personally as I have my screen figured out, and I use the tilt and rise gauges constantly, and would probably miss that a ton.
I would like to get out with you, and will make that trip. The amount of time I have really screws me a lot, but I’d love to figure it out. If we can get Jason there, that would be kick ***.
I’m not sure it’s $20+k more than my boat, and the chances of me selling my girl on a blue boat, basically the only thing she cares about is the look and color, is pretty low.. I have to twist her arm to get her to put the White Claw down and get on a surfboard, and she thinks our wave is plenty. So basically the only way I’m selling her a new boat is it has to look right!!
