May have been in McCall. Definitely didn't live down here unless it lived out in Emmett. Thanks for the pics.

I had a jet ski back in the day, that had that exact problem, so I considered that as a possibility pretty early on.

He lived somewhere a little out of town. Said they pretty much rode at a small reservoir near their house. He only put 27 hours on it in a year and a half, so he wasn’t out much. I met him in Eagle to pick it up.

I think ultimately the 2:1 is the fix. Probably the reason Tige went to it, in the first place. I guess seeing what it costs and finding someone capable of doing it right, are the 2 factors that will make the determination..

Well if you decide to hold onto the boat and it's something you want to do it's a project that we would be capable of. Getting your hands on the gearbox is going to be the tough part I think. Another member here recently needed a trans or v drive and I think I recall him saying getting it direct from Indmar was a pain. I haven't needed to try an order a 2:1 as a dealer from Indmar yet so not sure if they are easily available.

I didn’t realize you were at the dealer. I would love to keep this boat, if I can work the bugs out. Ballast leaks should be an easy fix for a service dept.. only other issue would be getting it to move the weight that it’s supposedly designed to. I bought it right, so I’d rather spend some money to make it what I want than to sell it and start over. I’m probably $20-30k to make the changes I would want, anyways.

Who makes the gear box?? You don’t think I could get one directly through Tige?

Here's an email from from Tige when I inquired about doing a 2:1 swap in an RZX2: (I had asked about any hull modifications and there was a bit of confusion about it. First it was thought that new motor mounts would need to be glassed in, then after a bit more research it was noted from Tige R&D that no modifications like that would be needed.)

          Tige R&D Dated 3-20-2018
          Josh

There is no modification needed on the hull other than cutting the hole
          bigger for the shaft.

The 2.1 transmission will have to come from Indmar we do not stock motor
          parts.

          Tige parts needed.

          D1055 Shaft seal
          D1011 Shaft
          D1038 prop
          U1007 Strut
          U1000 Shaft thru hull
And just for fun, this is an email from Indmar explaining the Raptor engines.

          Indmar Dated 12-14-2016
          Josh,
We buy 6.2L Marine base engines from Ford. They are not left-overs … they are built specifically for us as Marine base engines. All of the various Raptor models use the same base engine with the same block, pistons, crankshaft and camshafts … that includes, the 360, 400, 440, 460 and Supercharged 575. We do things to the engines to differentiate them both power-wise and cosmetically.
The numbers associated with our engines are torque numbers, not horsepower. The 400 produces approximately 350 HP and the 440 produces approximately 410 HP. Besides cosmetic and cooling system differences, the performance differences between the 400 and 440 are primarily a result of the way the computers that run the engine are programmed.
We do more than just add covers. We produce the exhaust system components, the fuel system components, all of the electrical and electronic systems. Basically anything that is not on the base engine when we buy it from Ford is ours.
He 400 and the 440 both use the same fuel … 89 octane is recommended. The 88 Octane no lead would be just fine and probably what I would use … otherwise 89 with no more than 10% ethanol is what we would recommend.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.
          From another email from Indmar:

          Indmar dated 12-14-2016
You are currently not able to reprogram a computer from a 400 and turn it into a 440 and purchasing a 440 computer outright is not an available option. Besides a change in the program, the 460 also uses a different intake system so upgrading a 400 or a 440 to a 460 in not a possibility.
Many of the parts on the 6.2L are the same between the automotive/truck version and marine version. Pistons, rods, rings etc. are all crossovers from the automotive/truck versions. The marine version uses a marine specific oil pan, oil pump and oil pickup so most of the parts of the base engine would be available as Ford parts.

Not a problem. I spent a bunch of time figuring all this out and ended up not using any of the info I gained. Nice to be able to pass it on.

I work as a tech at Prestige Water Sports here in Boise. We never saw or serviced your boat when it lived near here. Indmar is sourcing them from somewhere. I would have to pull the floor up on an RZX with a 2:1 and try and find a data plate on the box. Or just put out a feeler to Indmar and see what they say.

Knowing that you have confidence that you guys can handle it, and knowing that it is possible gives me some hope.. it would be a project that I’d want to tackle this winter, so it wouldn’t be rushed, and I wouldn’t be losing any of my summer. I’m sure you guys are buried until winter hits, anyways.

I have a call into Tige, maybe we can get somewhere with them, as well.

I’m surprised to hear that you haven’t seen this boat. I’m pretty sure the guy I got it from said that he had it winterized in Boise last year.

I appreciate it, either way. And you guys have helped me want to keep this boat, and given me some hope that it might work good, at some point. I’ll keep you guys posted on what happens from here!

We aren't the only game in town so he may have had it elsewhere. I certainly dont remember it but we do run through a ton of boats during wint season. If you PM the Hull ID # I can check my system and see if we have ever serviced it.
We wouldn't want to do the conversion until winter anyways. We may have some indoor storage lined up so if all the ducks fall into a row you could bring it here for wint and we could store it and do the work. Or if indoor storage falls thru we could winterize and shrinkwrap ir then get to it after the winterization rush does down. Good news is we have a lower labor rate in the winter to encourage some of this higher hour labor jobs.
It's not a job we've done before but I'm more than confident between our resources and the resources at Tige that its doable. Parts being the only hangup.

Zack...I was thinking about your complaints and it almost sounds like you don't have the prop that you think you have.

By chance have you actually checked the prop itself to be sure that you actually have what the paperwork says it is? You would not be the first guy to find out the prop on the boat is not what you thought it was.
                        Be excellent to one another.

It’s a good thought, and I wish it were that simple, but yes. After the first couple of times out, with it dragging ***, I assumed I had a stock prop, and would need to prop it for altitude. No love, the guy I got it from must have changed the prop out, already, as it probably wouldn’t even move in Boise with the stock prop. Unless Acme stamped it wrong somehow, it’s a 2419..

It’s pretty recognizable, but who knows. I also don’t really know what to believe from the guy I bought it from. Going to guess he winterized it himself, which makes sense considering the shops up here put everything back, plugs, etc, after winterization. So it’s ready to start in the summer. We had to find all the places for the plugs to go back in, and got them in a zip lock..

That all sounds pretty damn ideal, if we can find the parts and a price that works for us both!

Marine Specialties has been the only decent tow boat shop in town for decades. Your boat sticks out like a sore thumb in these parts. I’ll be making my triumphant return to the water out at Lahontan next week/weekend. If I see you, I might chase you down.
