    Ballast leak

    Hey all! Pretty sure I have a leak, during fill, on my rear starboard ballast. It takes twice as long to fill as the other side, and I’ve had a bunch of water in my bilge, when filling and dumping that ballast multiple times. It’s the only thing that makes sense in my mind..

    Is my thinking out of line? And any ideas what I should look at? Going to fill it with the fake-a-lake tonight, and see if I can see anything obvious.. it’s a 2016 RZX, BTW.. hoping it’s something obvious and an easy fix, which means I’ll be chasing it all night and it will be a huge PIA!! My dealer is 100 miles away, so I’m hoping to avoid that trip.

    Start with the bilge dry. If you start filling the ballast and see water entering the bilge, you know A) there is a leak and B) the water in the bilge is from it and not something else. Are there plug n play sacs or just the sub-floor?

      That’s why I’m going to do it at my shop, on the fake-a-lake. It’s just the sub floor ballasts.. I can’t think of another reason that ballast would take so long to fill, and where that water would be coming from.

        Do what Mike said first. It will tell you quickly if its the bag.

        If it point to the bag(s), check to see if the bags have orange fittings. You will need to remove the access covers to see them if you do not have plug and play setup. Later models went to a different material on the welded fittings. If they are black, you could have a torn fitting.

          Is that only for PNP bags?? I only have the hard ballast tanks, under the floor. And that could totally be a dumb question, on my part. I have yet to mess with them.. That 440 doesn’t need any additional weight, as far as I can tell.

            RZX has bags under the floor. There are access panels in the rear storage lockers. You will see the screws in the black plates.

              Correct, I wasn’t sure if the fittings you were talking about were for ballasts or bags..

              That’s good info, I was going to pull the big, center cover out, and try and access them that way. thank you!!

                I’m a liar. There are no hard boxes in this boat. I misunderstood something along the way.. they are bag under the floor, which everyone probably knows and thinks I’m an idiot because of...

                I do have some jacked up o-rings in the fittings on the bags. Does anyone know what size those are, by any chance??

                  I had fittings leaking on both rear bags because of o-rings. Those fittings are 1 1/8” Quik-lok made by flow-rite.. the o-ring replacement is part # MD-00255. Just for future reference.

                    Over time, ballast impellers can also wear out and cause it to take longer to fill/drain (on reversible pumps...not sure what kind you have)....and bag can leak down some thru the pump (if its thru-hull fitting on bottom of boat like mine) while surfing even when pump is not being run cause the seal on ballast impeller is no longer tight, I replaced the 3 ballast impellers on my 2014 this Spring for that reason.
                    Just FYI for down the road, with a 2016 its not likely you would have that issue yet.

                      That’s a good call. And thanks for the info! We only have about 50 hours on this thing, so we better not be having those kind of issues yet!! They are through hull, so it will probably be the case, and I’ll watch for it. I’m not super impressed with this ballast system, so far, but hopefully I’ll be happy once everything is dialed in.
