is the surf that great on the r20??

Hi there!
Im thinking of buying the new 2018 r20. Ive gone out in the water with the nxt20, nxt22 and the r20....the r20 wins me over so far!

We currently have a moomba outback v 2009 and love surfing. The moomba is barely working for this. Ideally I want to keep the size and price down but don't want to sacrifice on surf performance.

Am I making the right choice with the R20? Is there a massive surf difference between the R20 and say the r21??

So I haven't surfed a R21 but I think I am right in saying that between those 2 boats there isn't a massive difference. Majestic on here has a Z1 and he helped me dial in my R20 and he says there isn't a huge difference. I love my R20.

I was debating the same thing. There was a 2018 R20 near me in MPLS for $68k. I found a new 2017 R21 that needed to be moved by a dealer in Iowa and got it totally loaded for $63k w/trailer included (MSRP is just over $90k - so it felt like a no brainer). I don't regret choosing that over the R20 at all! Tige 5 year warranty started the day I bought it. The only thing I miss from the R20 is the pickle fork. However, I do like the 14 capacity of the R21. Very roomy. Never surfed in an R20, but from my last two days in the 21 w/only the wife, it still produced a big enough wave to surf easily. It has the Surf XL ballast (2,400 lbs) plus the boat is over 4,000 lbs, so plenty to get the wave going. In all, I don't think there's a wrong choice. Good luck!

We love our 15 R20 with Raptor and no Taps 3. With surf XL and nauticurl we get a great push and I am 6'4 270lb and I can surf way back and the smaller guys rip it. Squid on here has his dialled in perfectly from the vids I have seen. I will let newer owners respond however I understand that with the taps 3 boats more weight than the factory surf XL is needed (like the W005 bags from Mike). Surf and wake aside I am so happy every time I get out of an Axis, Moomba or Mastercraft entry level boat and back into the R20 as while I am biased I feel that the R20 has a more premium finish for an entry level boat. Also my boat was in the shop next to a Z1 on the weekend and while I can't deny there is more room inside the Z1 I got the feeling the R20 was a little higher in the sides. My only criticism (that probably does not apply to a traditional bow of the Z1) is that while the pickle fork looks great the nose does angle down so we need to be extra careful not to take one over the front when circling back and my friends Z1 is a dryer ride front on than my R20 in the chop so that might be worth thinking about if you face choppy conditions. All the pickles ride low up front. RZ2 and RZ4 are the same. If you park a Z and an RZ on identical boatmate with tongue jack at same heights you can really see it. The rub rail line starts dropping just in front of the windshield and keeps going down towards waterline all the way up to bow.
I personally like the R21 over the R20, but I know you said size is a consideration. Honestly would look at a Helix too if you are trying to stay small and churn out big wakes. R20 will look and feel nicer than the Helix.

A massive thanks for all replies.....and I guess Im gonna take the plunge and do it! The big toss up between the two boats was colour at this point. The dealer had an R21 for 78k (102k canadian) and the R20 for 76k (99k Canadian). Not much of a price difference but the R21 was Frost and orange. The wife is having a hard time looking at the orange. If there is little difference in wave, I don't mind the smaller boat. We live on a river and the water can get around the 6ft mark in certain places by late summer so the smaller the better!
If needed, how much more ballast can be added to the R20 to give it a bigger wave? It might be worth mentioning that we tend to go out with 2 in the boat and the rider so a bit more weight probably would be beneficial.
