The factory prop while good IMO is not ideal. the 17/17 after the time we put on them with about every prop combo around seemed to run the best even at upwards of 6K feet. Run it with confidence.

But do we need that much prop at 445'.

That question depends on what you are after. I am after low RPM/Surf performance/Cruise speeds. The 17/17 is actually less aggressive in terms of performance which is exactly my point.....We use lower pitches to get just enough slip in-order to push big big weight. 17 pitch as you know means that the prop is moving forward 17 inches with one rotation. That being said, the blades have more bite so you will lose some on the bottom but from what we have experienced their is plenty of bottom to spare. Going to a 17/17 dropped Rpm and increased cruise/top end with a negligible loss on the bottom we have had some guys run it at 3-5K feet with the 400 as well with no problems. I think its worth a try. Everyones goal with the 2:1 should be to use as much of that bonus torque as possible. IMO, thats adding enough pitch until the motor has a decline in performance then backing it off a little.

its 1.5-1. Depending on elevation we are in the 16 inch diameter range. Pitch I believe is around 15

In the end, go with the consensus recommendation (which seems to be 17/17). Give it a whirl. Then get your weekend saver prop either one pitch up or one pitch down depending on how you like the consensus prop, whether you go to altitude, etc.

It still amazes me that the 2:1 transmission allows for a 17/17 prop size on a boat 1000 lbs heavier than my Z3. My Z3 with 440 maxes out at 15" x 14 pitch before it does not have the pull I like out of the hole.

Yep just ordered to 17/17. We'll see how I like it and then probably do as you said and get something close as a weekend saver.

Keep it factory if it is working. a 15.5/15 runs pretty good too. But a 16/15 or 16/14 would be plenty.

What would you recommend for a 17' R22 with 400? I think 535 (?) is the stock size. Not much elevation.
