    Ran Boat Without Cooling System

    Real bad day today. Took boat out for maiden voyage of the year, but couldn't get off the ramp. When we started the boat up, it had a rough idle, so we sat for a few minutes, and eventually engine cut off. Gave it another go, and engine light came on. I tried this on and off for a couple of hours before we finally gave up. I actually thought I was experiencing vapor lock, which I thought was from not refilling the fuel cell with fuel, when I changed it. When we got back to the storage facility, I hooked up the the hose to the boat, and I got nothing out of it. After looking around, I noticed about a 1/16" gap at the impeller housing. I am not sure why there was this gap, as I had tightened the screws as much as possible. I took the impeller out, and looked at it. All the blades were still there, but it didn't look like it had a good day. I ordered a replacement. What do you guys recommend, here? If I install the new impeller, and everything seems good, should I just let it go? I've heard I should take a look at the exhaust hose to see if there is blistering, as well. We never really got a high engine temp, on any gauge, but I don't even know where that sensor is located. If it is downstream of the pump, it's completely worthless, in this instance.

        Sounds like you have multiple issue. A raw water impeller not priming would not cause the engine to run rough. So start with the obvious. Make sure you have the correct impeller and the oring and gasket are not let out upon the new installation.

        Once you have water flowing as it should, move on to the rough running. Yes, I would top off the fuel tank. Given the time of year now, good chance your local stations are now dispensing "summer" gas.

            No, water should still go to the exhaust manifold and exit.

              No water flow to impeller and engine? Is it possible that you closed the valve to the intake on the hull? You running on fake lake from under hull or you have a hose hookup inside engine bay?

              Thermostat only allows water flow to cool or not, no effect on whether or not you have water to engine....if thermostat is bad, it just wont open and cause an overheat. Sounds like something is keeping water from moving....have you checked belt to be sure it turning everything as it should and that water pump is spinning?

                  So, I got a newer impeller installed, and hooked up the hose again. Still no water flow through exhaust pipe, but I did find that all of the water was flowing out through a blown plug in the exhaust header. This was obviously the pressure relief noise that we heard yesterday. Can I replace these plugs, or am I going to have to replace the whole header?

                    So, basically it looks like one of these plugs shot out when it go too hot. I'll post more pictures later.

                      Per PCM Engine Manual, but I do not fill the block with antifreeze...just drain everything.

                          Also, looks like belt was slipping on circulation pump pulley wheel, and paint has started to come off on about 1/4 of it. Obviously unpainted surface is slicker. Go ahead and replace this?

                            I cannot see the attachments.
                            Future thots....if you only drain, its a good idea to put shop vac nozzle on each hole where you pull drain plug, I always remove a LOT more water doing that. I do suck up AF as in my personal opinion, it helps against corrosion and I like that impeller stays wet (eve tho I replace in Spring)....but being in NC, there are times when we will ride during winter so I like it ready to go if that happens and then I do another drain and suck u. But lots of people do not suck up AF for one reason or another and have no issue....many people also pull kill switch and bump the starter after pulling all plugs, this also removes more water since a simple drain can still leave puddles of water and if you dont bump it over or trailer boat for a while to "shake" water loose, you can potenially have issues. Dont know if this is what happened to you or not, maybe you forgot to pull 1 plug? (some insurance companies do cover this depending on what cost ends up being and the details of the policy...sometimes for them to cover, it has to be "professionally" done).
                            Hope you figure it out easily....not sure why I cannot see these attachments, can you upload like the 1st pic you posted above?

                              I'll link them instead of attaching, when I get home. I agree on AF/corrosion, but we are typically only winterized just a few months, so not supper concerned.
