Hmmmm, wonder its ECM issues. Another MP owner had issues with the MEFI 5 this year as well....

Besides verifying spark and firing order and testing FP at Schraeder I am at a loss. Other obvious ones are verifying neutral safety switch is functioning, but really doubt that's your problem.

      Map sensor?
      Oh Yeah!

stumbled across this thread while researching this issue.

I’m assuming I can backprobe the signal wires on the TAC to determine if the voltage is out of range, etc.

I was able to get it to fire and run after jockeying with the throttle a bit.

Have you tried reading any codes of the boat ECM?

              Check the ignition module/coil?

              Map sensor?

              vaccum leak?

The Dizzy internally could be worn out. Happens on vortecs.

                Coil is good..

Haven’t check module, (This would generate a code, correct?)

                Vacuum is good.

Yes, Dennis at Marine Power mentioned this however said it was unlikely at 250hrs of run time.

No codes, No warning buzzer or beeps.

Dennis seems to think it could be fuel related and if not going to delve into the timing side of things.
Going to take a look at pick up tube and vent lines on my next day off.

Planning to order the Diacom software and cable on Monday.
Once this arrives will check timing angle, uncertain if this will register when it’s not running.
Will check with the manufacturer about this on Monday.

                Really frustrating..

                All mechanical systems check out.
                Compression good on all cylinders
No corrosion or wear on any connectors or components
Fuel Injector cleaned and flowing perfectly.
                New HPFP
                New LPFP
                New fuel filter
                New Cap
                New Rotor
                New Plugs
                New Wires
                New batteries
                New fuel

I'm still pointing at the MAP sensor. Could be a vacuum leak as well.

Replace the injectors, do not clean them. The pintle inside is electronically fired and causing the problem by hanging up thus the backfiring from stuck injectors. Unless you have an alarm or a beep every minute there is nothing that will show in the ecm.

Have you verified spark during cranking? Ive only seen it once on a mercruiser with the same ignition system but the coil ignitor failed. It has a trigger and the coil mounted together at the back of the engine. It presents the same way but you need to verify spark during cranking first. Use the $3 spark checker from oreilly, plug inline and turn try to start the engine. If it shows spark, replace the fuel injectors like I stated above. If it doesn't show spark except when you let off the starter and allow the key to rest back in the "run" position then you have one of two issues: bad crank position sensor or bad pickup and coil. Heres the part number for the automotive crank sensor 917-755 (doorman products) $54 and automotive ignitor pickup 2-7137 (master pro) $75, neither is meant to be a permanent repair but the automotive parts here will work but are not meant for marine environments and should be replaced with the marine products that cost 4 times as much.

                        Update..

While I could theorize a number of possible reasons why I’ve literally been pulling my hair out trying to fix this boat.

After securing the Diacom software it appears that I have a few shadow gremlins at play.

Before hooking up the Diacom cable, I opted to pull all my plugs as I was able to get it running last weekend albeit poorly.

I let it idle and would load it on the lift and kept noticing an intermittent miss around 1250 rpms.

Given this I opted to pull all the newly acquire AC Delco 41-993 spark plugs and ohm all the Packerd Delcore 8mm wires, (also new).

Sure enough one plug was completely dead/fouled, and several others showing signs of fouling.

Replaced with NGK 3623, and reterminate all the spark plug cable ends, one was burnt where the electrode wire was not in contact with the terminal end. (second one from the pack that I found with this issue).

Hooked up Diacom and boat started on the first crank, (which hasn’t happened in 3 months).

Diacom is showing all systems good, although registering some previously stored fault codes.

I’m sitting in the boat as I type this with it running, and I can only surmise what I’ve always known General Motors factory replacement parts are hit/miss garbage.

Still uncertain about the 4 codes that were registering, however at idle and on a small load on the lift the rig seems to be running tip top.

Once the weather clears I’ll take it out for a few laps around the lake.

Hopefully this nightmare is behind me, (at least until the next Goverment Motors failure).
