    Somebody Kill the Fatted Calf!

    The prodigal son has returned.

We (ok, I) may have boat problem. This is the start of our fourth season of boat ownership. We are now on our 3rd boat. I hope it will be our last boat for a LONG time. This spring has turned into almost a copy of our last spring. We spent a few months discussing boats. Ours and the option of getting a different one. I was very close to moving forward with a supercharger install on the L96 in our MB F24. That would have required removing the stock ECM and running a GM ECM. That would have been fine, but I couldn't figure out how to make the Zero Off work with it. That meant swapping it out with Hydrophase and modifying the throttle to work with it. Yada yada yada, my wife decided she didn't want me doing all that. So the hunt began for a new boat. Just like last year we thought long and hard about building a new R23, or buying a used Z3. Storage to us is HUGE, so we reluctantly gave up those ideas as ballast would normally be full. We missed out on an awesome used RZX2 that Germaine Marine had because we were slow to respond. And then came VERY close to pulling the trigger on a new RZX3 they have, but after all the numbers came in it was just higher than the line we drew in the sand. So we reluctantly passed on it. Adam and Jason there have been great and very patient with us. I do hope to buy a boat from them someday.
At that point we started looking at an FI23. That's a nice boat, and brand new was within our budget. It has a ton of really cool features and my kids loved the idea of building our own and picking the colors. I'm sure glad we didn't go this route because of all the pinks and yellows they kept coming up with. Really my biggest hang up with that boat was how far back the tower was. I felt like I would hit my head every time I got in the boat. No thanks. Plus I really wanted a Tige.

We started looking hard at an RZX3 that PresTIGE watersports had in Boise. Chad (and Paden) made that decision a piece of cake. They gave me a great price and gave me what I needed on my trade in. I have to tell you, I was nervous about this one. One of my biggest hang ups was towing this heavy beast with my Ram 1500 ecodiesel. I love this truck and didn't want to get a new truck for towing duties once a week in the summer. Plus I think you all know concerns I have expressed about the "light weight" Boatmate 2 axle trailers. This one happens to sit on one of them. The last concern would be the power output of the 440 engine at our elevation.

So last friday I headed up to Boise to pick it up. Really full of fear. It was great to meet Chad and Paden and go over the boat with them. I then hooked up and started the drive home. I could definitely feel the boat back there. I felt slow to get going. As the miles passed comfort set in. I was at 70 pretty much the entire way home except on the bigger hill climbs. I got into some crazy side wind near the border of utah. The wind didn't phase the trailer, at all. That made me super happy. So it turned into a very uneventful trip home, covering about 360 or so miles at 70 mph and got just over 14 mpg. I can live with that. I have ordered air bags to help support the rear axle sag and to give support in bad roads. I think then the outcome will be great. I think my fears of these lighter weight trailers are about put to rest. I always keep a VERY close eye on my trailers while traveling so that will continue with this one.

We got it out on our lake for the first time on Monday night. I had no idea how to really work anything on the boat. I fumbled my way through the screen trying to set things up and run other things. We took off and got up to speed fast! 30 mph running only 3600ish rpms. My old boat did 24 mph at 5200ish, but was propped way down. We then figured out how to fill all the ballast full and got right up to 12.5 mph. Test #2 passed. I think it's safe to say this boat has a learning curve to it and I have a lot to learn! We look forward to getting out on it more in the next couple weeks and cannot wait for the water to warm up.

So I'm happy to say we are back.

      Congrats man!

I was a little hesitant about the tandem axle at first as well, we've only towed 20min but it definitely wasn't bad. What prop are you running with the 440?

You simply double your boat spend every .8 years and get a new one. Next stop: Pavati!

              17 x 15.5. I don't recall the number right off.

Yeah, I know. I sure hope I can look back on this thread in 5-10 years and it still be 3 boats.

Is that gonna pull full PNP and lead or whatever at elevation?

I know you surf in the clouds. I thought for sure you were a supercharger guy.

You know what they say, buy your second boat first. I think that could be amended to buy you 3rd boat second. One thing I have learned is that when it comes to big purchases, either go big and get exactly what you want, or stay small. That is to say, for some reason I would be much happier with a reliable $15K boat than I would be if I had spent $80K but really wanted the $100K boat.

Congrats man, that is a sweet ride. You storing that beauty outside? If so, make sure you have a FULL cover that goes over everything, otherwise the sun will kill it. I used a cover made to go over T top center console boats while I was in Louisiana for a couple of years and it worked great. Had the regular cover on and then the T top cover over the regular cover. Everything stayed nice a dry and out of the sun's rays. I'd run a couple of fans set on timers for good measure if it's staying at your house. I have just seen a few nice 5 yr old boats that were so faded.

CONGRATS!! WELCOME BACK! Really happy to hear that RZX3 with the 440 has the power to move that thing out there since its only like 60lbs of torque more than your L96 was. Does it have the 2:1 trans in it? I have to agree with Dakota, thought sure after you going through all the work to try and supercharge the MB, you might as well just get one that was already supercharged. I have a hard time understanding the extra cost of a 440 over the 400 since the only difference is the tune on ECU. I know a few dealers in UT/CO that order Supercharged boats exclusively for the altitude because the N/A motors even will massive props they just don't get the functionality out of the boat or plates they would like to see. I guess the benefit is the RZX3 doesn't really like to be slammed with extra weight to surf and the plates do all the heavy work so to speak. Didn't notice if that had an FAE on there already or not, would be a nice upgrade for that boat really makes a difference.

                        Super nice looking boat.
My life's journey is not ending up looking pretty, its sliding in broadside, used up, worn out, screaming "What a Ride"

TheGerman. The rzx3 comes standard with 440, so no need to upgrade from the 400. Also surf pipe is standard on the new ones.

                          Where are the wave pics?

Is this boat new or used? Has a registration on it, figured it must be used to some extent.

We have one similar colors on our lake. Looks dope in the sun!

Very good points. I really wanted my next boat to be supercharged, or at least better running at our elevation. That's what got me so interested in the FI23. That new hull is allowing them to run heavy weight here in Utah with a NA engine. Jason got me a smoking deal on a supercharged 3, but in the end it was still too much for me. So we had to pass. Boulder Boats has a used supercharged 3 that was sold when I first contacted them. Then it wasn't sold any more so we started talking numbers. I put in a final offer and then never heard from them again. The day after I brought this one home they more or less accepted my offer. That was lame! We like the colors much better on our new one though. But no worries suits me much better.
Chad was great though and took ours out for some tests I asked him to do. His lake is just under 3000' so I had to take that into consideration. Here's what he did, copied from an email:

                              "These are the results…

No ballast, two people in the boat, and a 1100lb. ballast bag in the middle.

Cruising speed of 22.5 MPH – 3800 RPMs

                              30 MPH – 4700 RPMs

Full ballast with overflow 500lb. bags (4,000 lbs.), two people in the boat, 800lb. bag in the bow, 1100lb. bag in the middle, and an additional 800lb. bag in the rear… AKA a lot of weight!

13 MPH – 3800 RPMs, accelerated to this speed without hesitation, impressed how fast it got there actually.

                              11.8 – 3600 RPMs

Cruising speed of 22.5 MPH – 4450 RPMs

                              30 MPH – 5300 RPMs"

After those results I figured it was worth a shot. It does have the 2:1 transmission with a 17" prop so I'm sure that helps. I also do not plan to run any lead, and just take the wave for what it is, which should be ok, even in stock form. I blame this next part on Bakes5: I have also realized there is more to boating than just surfing. Chad threw in a knee board and a kids wakeboard and if we must, we have tubes as well. We decided to expand our horizons this year. As much as I love surfing, I love watching my kids having fun out there even more. They still don't care what size the wave is. All three are under 100 pounds so it's not like they need a monster.
Our main lake is 4200'. Once or twice a year we hit up another one at 6200'. I don't expect much there and that's ok. The other lakes we go to on occasion are around 3000'. Should be fine there.

All I know for sure is that the water needs to warm up!
