Servicing Marine Power 6.0 - 24V - draining the closed loop cooling system

    Hello all,

I am getting ready to do all of the annual service items on the boat for the first time. I have done a lot of research over the last few days, read forums, downloaded manuals etc. and I think I have a handle on the oil, trans, and v-drive fluid changes. I will of course change the impeller and I am also going to change the G Force fuel filter because I am not sure if that has been done in awhile. I am not going to change the smaller in line fuel filter on top of the engine because that was done about a year ago (or maybe i should change it?). I have two main questions I am hoping to get help with:

    1) is there any other typical service items I am missing? I will also do all the operational checklist items like making sure the blower, bilge pump, lights, trailer breaks, etc. work.

    2) It looks like I will be able to drain the engine oil and perhaps v-drive and trans fluids through the drain hose and out the main drain plug above my taps plate without much of a mess. But how do I drain the coolant? it is the closed loop system. The manual notes two drain plugs on each side of the block. Do I really just remove those and let all of the coolant drain into the bilge area and out of the rear drain plug? This seems very messy. I suppose I could syphon it from up top but the engine service manual says it can take 24 qts and I only have a hand transfer pump so that would take awhile. Plus I doubt this method would get all of the fluid from inside the block?

Or... is it not worth flushing the entire cooling system?

Any help is appreciated. I hope to post a write up and photos on all of this as I go.

    Thank you, Kyle

That's what I was thinking. I looked at my receipt from last year's service and it wasn't changed so I don't know if/when it was flushed last.

Would you drain from the block and through the bilge?

All, I reached out to Marine Power with a few questions. George Fowler got back to me within 24 hours and also provided a link to the newest owners manual for the MP engines. Note that this owners manual supersedes the version that can be downloaded from MP's website. Here it is:

Thanks for posting Kyle. The customer support at MP is pretty awesome.

Guys, I have started my service quest and I am having trouble with a couple of things. I am hoping someone on here can show me the light...

            1) I have the G-Force fuel filter coming on Tuesday for the G-force fuel filter/pump/water separator assembly. However, my motor also has this in-line fuel filter mounted on the intake manifold just next to the plastic Vortec/GM cover. Does anyone have a part number for this? Auto Zone struck out because it is not the stock fuel filter that comes on chevy trucks. Should this be replaced as well? (I think maybe so to be safe?)

            2) From reading other threads I thought I would have a hose with a valve coming out from either the port or starboard side of the oil pan so that I could direct it out of the hull drain plug to drain the oil. I am pretty sure I do not have this? I also can't even seem to locate any form of drain plug in the oil pan? Any ideas here? I only have a cheap Harbor Freight hand transfer pump so I am hoping to avoid sucking the oil out through the dipstick bay.

This website is Marine Power's parts hub. You should be able to visually match your filter here. If not just call them.
I have yet to see a 6.0L MP roll thru my bay. Just a lot of the 340HP configured 5.7L.
Typically the oil hoses will come right out of the bottom of the pan where the drain plug woukd normally be, not out of the side of the pan. If you can look under with a light and mirror you should be able to verify. If theres no hose from the bottom of the pan then it will be a suck it out of the dipstick tube job. PM me if thats where you end up. Have some old reversibles that i have saved that could be converted into oil sucking pumps pretty easily.

Thank you for the offer. I actually did find the drain plug tube last night. It was located on the port side of the oil pan towards the rear of the boat and it was hiding behind many larger diameter hoses. It also threw me off because the drain hose wasn't coiled up in the bilge but rather it was zip tied to other hoses and it ran up the side of the motor towards the back seat back. I also had to remove the brass cap to get the line to go through my hull drain hole and then put the cap back on right away to avoid any oil from leaking out. Here is a photo of what it looks like for anyone that might have similar struggles in the future. I am just waiting on a couple of parts I ordered online and then I will change all the fluids!

Might take a long time for the oil to come out if you do not run the engine and warm up the oil.
