    Question about Knock Sensor

I took my new to me 2008 22VE out last weekend for our first cruise of the year. Boat ran great the whole time we were out. I guess we got a little antsy cause its going to get down in the low 20's here tomorrow, so I did a "quick" winterization following the guide I found in the how-to section (Great guide by the way).

When I went to pull the knock sensor/engine block drain plug on the port side I found something weird. The drain plug portion was in place as it should be, but the knock sensor that bolts into the drain plug was not there. I found the knock sensor still attached to the knock sensor wire harness or plug but it was just hanging down beside the motor.

Of course I plan reattaching it (I need to get a new bolt first) but I just wanted to ask if it was at all weird that the boat seemed (atleast to me with no prior inboard boat experience) to run just fine at all speeds while we were at the lake for about 2 hours.

    Thanks for any feedback!

Not mounted to the block means the knock sensor will never sense knock. So , not a good thing as hearing spark knock on a boat can be tough with the insulated engine bays and the engine behind you. Engine will run the same as an engine thats not knocking, even if it is knocking.

^yep. Wondering why previous owner or shop did that. Are the threads messed up on that knock sensor? My 07’ has one on each side.

The 08 is more like a puck that thru-bolts to the drain plug. Someone likely threaded the plug in and forgot or did not realize its the base for the KS.

How much knock can a knock sensor sense if a knock sensor's not sensing knocks?

That’s a good point. It does have two spots to put a wrench on. I assume it comes apart into two pieces though I never took it apart. I stopped wrenching on the outer nut when I saw it wasn’t removing the actual plug. The inside of it is the part you gotta put a wrench on to remove it from the block.

That’s pretty much what thought, but I wasn’t sure if not sensing anything at all (I.e. hanging in mid air) would or would not cause the ECU to do anything weird. It didn’t seem to have any negative effect on performance but I was just curious...
Got it reconnected now but unfortunately it is cold and rainy today
