Regarding tongue weight the new 18 trailers for the rzx seem to have a much longer tongue so maybe that takes away from the tongue weight as my chev 3500 surprisingly doesn’t squat a lot compared to other things I’ve towed. So 8400 plus 900 lead and some fuel I’m pushing 9500 with gear.... ouch...

I was really thinking I wouldn’t need the extension if I got a 7ft length one because of the longer tongue.

Preach, Freeheel. Anyone towing these big things with half tons has bigger cojones than me. It’s not about being able to go, it’s about being able to stop, especially in any kind of emergency situation. My truck is rated to tow 12,000, and my, apparently 9000lb-ish setup still feels semi-heavy on there. I tow a lot of different stuff through the sierras, had a half ton for my last truck, and went to the 3/4 ton because the half ton just couldn’t take it. Went through 2 trans and 3 sets of brakes in 100k.. if safety is a concern, I’d go 3/4 ton, or more. Especially in any mountain situations.

I’m not gonna lie. I even poked around an f450 the other day. What a ride. If I was buying the 350 again, I’d be tempted to go duelly. It’s another step up from the srw super dutys. One shocking thing about the 450 is it had a much smaller turning radius. I was pretty shocked how tight that thing could turn around compared to my 15.

True story. I also tow a 30' travel trailer and used to do work and play with a 1/2 ton in the hills. No trans needed yet(kept the 1/2 ton when I bought the f250) but it would cook diff fluid while towing the camper. Would literally change diff fluid after every trip.

Wasnt try to preach as much as point out a trend I see a lot and boats dont seem to be getting any smaller or lighter.

The only concern I have had with my HD is that the rear ends and transmissions do not always last that long. My truck only has 20K miles and you can feel the shifting is very abrupt. I have also been told the rear end is liable to go out a lot sooner and this is from my family mechanic that has assembled the major parts of a transmission (blindfolded) in Vegas when they used to do competitions like this. He told me these stopped due to people thinking transmission mechanics are scam artists even though the major parts were only used (transmissions have hundred of parts and I know this because he helped me rebuild my Bronco's tranny). Just bragging about him because his knowledge and experience is 2nd to none IMO.

Anyhow, I bought the extended warranty on my truck but that would be my biggest complaint on HD. Not sure how other diesels fair but I was taught that they all have their issues. Regardless, I brought this up only to illustrate that the 1/2 ton world is changing every year and I am willing to give them another chance soon. The price difference between gas and diesel is narrowing... Many gas (and 1/2 ton diesels) can tow 12K plus! Crazy! Unless you tow the newest boat with tons of gear... you will not bust that weight. The 2019 RAM 1500 claims 1200+lbs and the eco boost has claimed past that with a V-6. I LOVE MY RAM CUMMINS... Don't get me wrong. lol. But I do like to think about it from all angles. Makes sense to do the math and investigate whether the juice is worth the squeeze. Yeah My truck can get 20+ mpgs on it's best day not towing and I can pass people 75 mph up hill all day. But put something behind it and 10-14 mpgs all day. My buddy's EcoBoost would do 14 mpgs while towing. Not to mention for me I'm not towing far nor on aggressive terrain usually. So that influences my decision as well. Love all trucks. Really do. As I grow older I prefer to keep em stock as possible (no lift kits or bigger tires) and use them as intended. Buy extended warranties and roll the dice. That's my 2 cents.
