    R23/Z3 stock wave

Hi all, first session of the season this past weekend and first time behind new R23. Was awesome getting back in the water after winter break. I had a really hard time getting a wave with good push, and I tried a lot variances with settings with bow ballast, taps, and speed. I am running stock wave, but I am going to be adding steel shot ballast bags (500#/side) and run the exact settings that Elevated (thanks) has shared on the '17 Z3, so i suspect this hopefully is a temporary issue until we get the lead.

Anyways, the best wave I was able to get running stock wave (though still not awesome had to work way too hard to stay in the pocket, lacked push further back on the wave) , was running rears 100%, front about 20/25% with more on surf side (goofy), taps 3 at 4-5, taps 2 at 6. I prefer a steeper wave, but also with enough length and push to launch airs and recover from my amateur 3s. I'm 5'8", 160, riding a soulcraft hc pro 4'6".

Any thoughts to dialing the R23/Z3 wave with stock ballast on this hull? Next time I am thinking of doing what we did with prior boat (08 Z1) which I feel for push and height was dialed, and that's leave bow empty and just go all rear.

    Thanks in advance for feedback!

What speed were you running? I was told with no lead do 4 and 4 on the taps and surf tabs and about 50 percent in front and rears full about 11 mph or so. I put mine in the water first time last weekend and used full rears fronts about 75 percent full surf tabs at 2 and taps at 5 and was running 11.8 on speed however I have 400 lbs lead also in the rear. There are so many more variables with this boat I feel. Its going to take awhile to figure everything out. I am going to plug my ballast ports like elevated recommended to stop the draining issue, maybe add another couple hundred in lead. The wave was decent with the settings i ended up using. I think it is capable of a whole lot better thou.

started out running 11.4-11.8 with 60/40 in the front and 4/4 taps, but that wave was just not cutting it. i could stay in but only if I dropped the bow weight as i said. when we did that the wave got better, but even a little more when we dropped to 10.8. the issue was also when we did that and had taps 3 a little higher the wave was pretty dirty, it had a weird curl on top.

tell me about it. But throw 600-800 lbs of lead back there and it's fantastic. Don't forget to figure out some way to plug your surf side drain ports or else water will just drain out as you go.

To clarify, this picture is showing when i was intentionally pumping the rear ballast to fill to 100%. Should I assume that first one is my overflow?

You definitely need more weight! All that hull is exposed and not doing any "wave-making" for you

And yes, you can assume the vent is the front one. The one that is dribbling in the back is likely the drain and the one that needs to be plugged or re-routed as the case may be. The third one is probably your bilge pump (it is often smaller diameter on the inside)

                      R23/Z3 stock wave

This pic isn’t great but it shows about where the water level is on my Z1 (basically the same hull as yours).

I am running about 1600lbs in the rear in this photo with more on the port than starboard.

I have since upped it even higher with a new prop to 2100 or so, evenly weighted for the most part. Note that I am using a suck gate and the Vx. I’m not sure if TAPS3 wants the same kind of weight or distribution. All I know is more hull in the water = bigger wave.

                      Me and my Z1

hearing it! thought i could get more from stock setup, but as usual awesome knowledge here. thanks to Johnniemo and Langwell and Bakes and Sublimer for the feedback.

I have a couple extra fly high 500s? from my last boat i will throw in until we get lead added next month. I definitely see I need to sink her down more!
