    marine power oil change

Hey guys I read the oil change post and it was a little helpful but grew into draining the oil more than the oil type. My manual says 40 weight thats it. (For a 2005 22v with marine power 340 h). I see some guys say they use 15w40 and a brand mentioned was Rotella T. when I look for 15w40 it says that its diesel engine oil, does that matter??? I was also wondering about the Rotella T5 which is a synthetic blend or the Rotella T6 which is full synthetic. Do those matter does anyone use synthetic? Do you need a special filter with synthetic or the regular ones work?

Rotella is the best dinosaur oil. I use it in racing motorcycles.

I use the Mercury Quicksilver 25W-40 since that is what the dealer put in my MPI 340 since it was new. Mercury formulates their oil in house specifically for marine applications, there is a thread and video about it somewhere on here.

It looks like the quick silver is a marine application oil, it the Rotella?? or does it matter? whats the difference with the 15w and the 25w?

We run Sierra 25-40 synth blend in just about everything except the Raptor, Newer volvos, and outboards. There's a much more scientific explanation but basically your low number should be picked based on your ambient temps at startup, and obviously OEM recommendations. The colder it is the lower you need to go(a 5w will remain thin and will flow in the cold more than a 25w which will become more viscous and resist flow causing lack of lubrication on startup). As boats are typically used in warm weather a 25 is considered safe.
          No special filter needed.

Thanks for that little bit of info does it matter if it says marine oil or not? im in alberta canada so a little north of you so a 15- 25 should be good. the manual only says a 40 weight.

15-25 on the bottom end is fine. Dont go below 40 on the top end. Ie a 15-40 or a 25-40. A 10-30 would be too thin on the top end. There are some benfits to running an FCW-3 rated marine oil in outboards. For your marine power it's recommended but not necessary.

i live in New Brunswick and have about the same weather as you. my 2007 rz2 also has the 340hp marine power. I have only ever used rotella 15-40 as this is what tige recommended from the dealer. its has the best additives for great results and its super cheap and easy to find aka Walmart. I run a NAPA gold filter and have had zero issues. Just my 2 cents.

If you read the manual it specifically says not to use multi viscosity. However PCM and Indmar recommend 15-40 for the exact same block engine that year. I have been running pep boys 15-40 or Castrol 15-40 which ever one is on special when I purchase the oil. No issues.

The Rotella T 15w40 is what you're after. It is rated for diesel engines, but it is also rated for gasoline engines as well. Here is the thread that gets down into why everyone likes it, skip into the 2nd page, thats when the Rotella starts to get in the convo.

I use the Rotella T-4, 15w40...as stated, it has the CJ-4 rating. I change oil every 40-50hrs since its pretty cheap and easy to do and that is 2 times a year for me, sometimes 3, why take a chance on something like that when its one of the most important things you can do for your engine (and only takes 30mins and maybe $40). I don't run the synthetic simply cause its a thinner oil and supposedly on startups (once engine sits for a while without running), it does not have the lubrication that regular T-4 does. That is speculation on my part since I am not a mechanic, but did quite a bit of research cause I do run synthetics in everything else and had planned to do it for the boat too. After research, just decided to stick with the T-4.
That said, my local Tige dealer uses Mobil One 5w30 synthetic for all his boats and service and buys in 55gal drums too. My engine is PCM so sticking to what they recommend since I value my warranty tho I have never heard of warranty denied for type of oil used, tho I am sure it could happen. My 3yr PCM warranty just ran out this month actually and I never had a single issue with it, still have another 2yrs left on the boat.

I just found it at costco for $60 for 15 liters. Its also cheap at princess auto. I am getting the filter at Napa.

Thats what I'm going to go with but it goes against what I've been taught about synthetic helping with engine longevity? Everyone here seems to love the dino oil with no complaints so ill stick with whats proven!!!!!

Not sure when the longevity part kicks in my my work SUV has about 280K and never seen a drop of syn. Its towed on a regular basis since day one. 20 years in the auto repair biz before moving to boats, i have not seen enough to justify the cost difference. I put far more stock in regular maintenance. With that said, I do run Castrol syn in my new Dub.
