Yep. You can ignore that Coast Guard sticker...
Or remove it if the boat is <21ft

It would be interesting to see everyone post pictures of where their rub rail is in relation to the waterline to get the wave the way they like it. Always seems like the closer the rub rail gets to the waterline the more I like the wave, but that's a pretty inaccurate gauge.

It may sound like a lot of weight and it is, but having the boat more or less evenly weighted you’ll hardly notice it. It’s when your boat is extremely listed that you really notice it.
Here is an example of a DIY suck gate. I’ve made and sold a bunch to friends and others in Denver. Selling these for a $100 + shipping if you’re interested. I only have all black right now. They work great, only thing is, and this is true for all models of suck gates, DIY or not, they need to be attached to a flat surface or they won’t stay on. More often than not the people that complain about them not staying on either don’t clean the point of attachment (covered in wax or algae, etc..) or try to attach it to a curved surface.

Nice job. Looks like the Swellsurf for a lot less. Is it all HDPE??

Yep, HDPE and stainless hardware. Only down side is they don’t float so I attach a nylon rope to a small $10 bumper (plastic bottle or whatever will float it would work) in case it comes off. Myself and most of my friends with boats have been using my design all last summer. They stay on really well as long as you scrub the area it attaches too prior to putting it on the first time, especially after waxing your boat. I’m sure it depends on the lake your boating in. I’ve seen people attach the lanyard to the boat and when it comes off it springs back and tags your boat or a person. I’ve seen gelcoat get chipped as a result but have only heard about a person getting tagged.

I've had chipped gel coat and injured passengers. I check all the boxes! So don't tether it to your boat!!!

I want to build a new one that floats. I like your design. Maybe you could fill in the center section and get floatation.

HDPE is hard to find in Canada unfortunately.

Maxpow- come to some of our surf nights at Little Bow and we will help you dial in that wave. I have a spare 750lb fat sack and you can try my suck gate too. What prop do you have?

maxpow, JohnnieMo is that guy from Calgary I was telling you about with the Z1. Jetter and Macteacher are from Lethbridge. My gut feeling is that your wave is good but you need a better board made for the bigger guys. Like Johnnie was saying, we can hook up for a surf night somewhere and you can try out some different boards, and most of us (except for me ) are on the bigger side so we have some good big guy boards you can try.

Or we can head out to St Marys in may before the season and mess around with the waves. I know I have to mess with mine a bit, because Im not sure if the new prop I got is doing good things for my wave.

I buy HDPE online from Interstate Plastics....all kinds and they will cut to size. Reasonable prices, shipping is what gets ya. $100 order....plus $38 for shipping, but what I got was not light. I made a custom step into my back seat so people can get up to transom without stepping on the vinyl anymore. I put 2 pieces under the vinyl (cut out foam and secured it to the base)....then new skins are being installed in a week or so and then I will installed a 3/8" thick X 12" deep X 14" wide piece of HDPE over vinyl (so vinyl is sandwiched between the HDPE)....then a piece of SeaDeck over the exposed piece of HDPE will finish it off and make it look OEM. No more ripping seam/stitching for me!!

It will look like this picture but with SeaDeck on it once my skins are installed. I did a "mockup" with old vinyl first to make sure I was gonna like it.

Max - it is settled then. You are coming to surf nights.... and perhaps the reunion. Here is a video about the disaster I'm talking about.

                                MaxPow,

I have the exact same boat - 2005 22V and am here in Lethbridge, and we surf the heck out of it all summer long. I would be happy to meet up with you sometime this season and show you the set-up that I run (I have run it with and without the suckgate that I made). Board choice and often technique can make a huge difference as well. It is great to hear that you are hoping to make it to the Meet Up this year - it is great place to meet the owners in the area, swap boat stories and try out new/different boards, boat set-ups....

                                Look forward to meeting you!
