    New R23+ Engine break-in

A few photos of my new R23 that's days away. come on.... come on...

exterior: midnight metal flake + graphite flake secondary,
    hull/deck: stone
interior: almond- blue with mocha accent, teak gator grip..
I went with the raptor 400, FAE, among other upgrades. Coming from an 08 Z1 this is gonna be a nice step up.

Probably picking up 2nd week of Jan...so itchy to get in and ride (though not surfing until spring) which brings with it some questions about engine break in. I will get dealer recommendations as well, but this TO site has been great info so far on a number of topics.

Indmar recommends 10 hrs, then oil change, but now that we're mid-winter in North TX we still go below freezing fairly regularly. I figure I can drain engine on my own after running (one of the great features of the raptor is how easy this is), but are there other considerations for break in? How important is the 10 hour oil change (other than keeping warranty intact)? what about aesthetics..i.e. i know they come from factory with wax, but does anyone shore up with additional coats? Interior vinyl protection?

    Anything else?

thanks, I'm stoked. any recommendations on breaking in or setting up the first time, other than what indmar says?

          Congrats!

You'll get a lot of different advice, should be a few threads you can read through on break-in. You'll hear everything from follow it to the letter to protect your warranty, to warm it up and run it. Our first ride was with the dealer, and after it was up to operating temp, he put it through the paces including full ballast surfing. After that run, I wasn't quite so ambitious, I ran it easily and unloaded for another couple of hours, varying the rpm to help settle the rings, and then away we went. This is just based on my experience from racing -- break-in wasn't a super long process, just enough to let the rings get into a comfortable groove and make sure they aren't going to blow out, and then good to go. Others will definitely disagree, to each his own...

I did my first oil change at 14.2 hours, fwiw, using Indmar fluids and Napa Gold filters, again just all personal preference, everyone will have a different opinion.

I also did a very thorough interior conditioning job, using boat bling at first (have switched to hula now, had an awesome customer service experience). I wanted a good layer of conditioner before any grubby paws got inside it. First season with 4 kids under 5, and the interior is still perfect.

You already know the most important thing though -- enjoy it! A new boat means you get to be the first person to scratch it!

The 10 hour oil change is very important for longetivity. All of the fine metal particles from the rings, bearings etc braking in are heaviest in the first few hours of service. Keeping the oil clean will add many hours in the years to come. As cheap and easy changing the oil is, sooner than 10 hrs only helps. The longer you can keep from getting on it under load the better. It’s not so much the rpms being turned for short durations, but the hole shots that put tremendous loads on the bearings and pistons. A little restraint now pays off in the long run.

Do you take your new cars and trucks in and have the oil changed at 300 miles?

Look at CHP, trying to start an argument

One surprising thing I have found is that different manufacturers have very different break in procedures, yet the motors are very much the same. PCM says run it up to 5200 RPM for 1 minute every so often, others say never go top speed. This is a sure sign nobody knows what is actually the best.

The initial service is also a time for the dealer to do a bunch of other things like check alignment, and a laundry list of bolt tightenings and such. That alone is worth paying the service, if the mechanic actually does those things the boat mfg recommends.
                Be excellent to one another.

For the raptor motors, even between Malibu and Tige there’s a difference in what they say to do. When riding season hits we sure aren’t waiting around to get 10 hours.

agreed...hence the need to get the hours in before April.

If you look at this the rpm really doesn’t seem to be much of a concern so surfing really can’t be that bad.

Mine had 13 hours as a dealer demo new boat—it had pulled a wakeboard comp in those hours. Nobody seemed too alarmed.

Exactly^^ Now that I think of it was at a surf comp with a brand new boat.
