2006 Tige 24Ve Buyers advise needed

    Hey all,

First time poster looking for some advise.

Have owned my 2001 Tige 20i for many years now and am looking to step up in size to accommodate more people and start surfing. Found a 2006 24Ve locally (Washington State) but it is in rough shape. The issues:
    - Current owner is 2nd owner, previous owner lived in texas and used boat in brackish/salt water.
    - Upholstery is completely shot. It will need to be completely reupholstered.
    - Paint is chipping off of tower. Seems like oxidation has gotten under the powdercoat.
    - Boat is in general dirty
    - Engine was not winterized last winter 2016-2017 and the block cracked.
    - No ballast (this may be a good thing)
    - Rudder attachment to boat has some silicone on it that I don't understand
    - Pictures attached

    On the positive side:
    - They got engine replaced at the end of this season, I was able to take it for a test ride and it seems like a great boat.
    - Engine is powerful, sounds great, and well... Isn't cracked
    - Steering cable is in good shape
    - Trailer is in good shape
    - 24Ve is on my short list of boats

They are asking 29K for it. What do you all think a fair price would be for a 2006 24Ve without all the above issues? What do you think it will cost to make this baby cherry and Surf ready?

That boat looks like way too much work, especially for the price. Go spend a couple more grand a buy this.

The interior will cost 3-5k. Ballast install $2000-4500 depending if you do the install yourself or not. Lots of write ups on installs. You can remove the tower and strip the powder coat from it easily with aircraft paint stripper, then recoat in your color of choice. Shops in Denver charge around $3-500 to powdercoat a naked tower. Or you could polish the aluminum and go with a shiny chrome look. It also looks like it’s missing one of the wakeboard racks which isn’t a huge deal but is extra ammo for negotiation. Those type aren’t cheap.
The rudder plate sealant is most likely from the factory. I have an 07 22VE and mine looks very similar. Tige’ attention to details and quality control wasn’t as good back then as it is now. I have the same trailer for my boat and it’s well built.
I personally wouldn’t hesitate to buy it if the price was right and your confident the big ticket items (engine/trans/vdrive) are in good working order. New engine is a huge positive! You can always have it inspected if you’re not confident in your own ability to look through it. Price seems to be reasonable although I’d try to get it more around 26-27k considering the TLC it needs. Seems like you should have some good negotiating room considering the look of it.
I like the idea of being able to redo the interior however you like and building the ballast to suit your boating needs. You’d have a $38-42k boat after you churched it up.
      Happy hunting!

I don't see a brand new engine as much of a plus. It just means that the previous owner probably peed all over the interior and took a dump in the storage compartment as well because they didn't care about the boat. These engines usually fail because of neglect or bad luck, but not because of overuse. Don't let engine hours tell the story of the boat's life.

I did a quick search on onlyinboards and found 2 24Ve listed for 40K, which I thought is crazy generous. I would be surprised if they could sell for that price. The 35K one listed above is in great shape, and they may come down a little as well.

Just given the fact the boat sat in the sun with no cover and the Texas dust storms got all over it, I would be worried about all of the exposed electronics under the dash. I am surprised the amount of dust on the new engine. Looks like there is not a cover for it? Factor in another grand there if you want a good cover.

2006 is the year of the worst cruise control in history. It works, but you cannot tell when it is on. You can search on here about it.

I admit that I am stingy when it comes to what people think these boats are worth. I would not buy this boat for more than 24K. And after you've babied it up to par, you will have 8K plus all of your labor into it. And you will still have to compete with the 2007 24Ve at 35K listed above. And it may be that your instrumentation was exposed to brackish water. I wish I could say I never got water splashing onto or over my windshield, but stuff happens. Is there corrosion at the battery connectors and behind the dash?
        Be excellent to one another.

The one I linked above has been in stock at that dealer for a long time, there’s definitely some negotiation that could happen on price.

            I'm with Tall...

I am a self admitted and known boat flipper. One of the first rules of selling and buying boats is DO NOT bring a salt boat into a non salt area. Its just not smart unless its a steal. That one is not and probably never was.

I stay away from upholstery at all costs. First its expensive, next most people can't do it themselves, and lastly the people who do do it are in demand and almost always weeks out.

That boat is always going to show salt signs in a non salt market. Its always going to be a low to average book boat. Never going to be Cherry or Bristol.....its never going to be one of those 40K boats mentioned. FYI there isn't any 06 24Vs that are 40K boats anymore to educated buyers....

So do some math. Lets start south of the really nice 07 which is clean and not a salty dog.... say this boat is a $33K all day after clean up. So 33,000-5K upholstery - 3K ballast - 500 tower repair -$2500 for everything else your gonna find. So now you have to pay $22000 for the boat if you are willing to just give away all your time and labor.

When looked at that way the average person would go buy the 35K one and just go surfing with family and friends, instead of working on a boat for days and weeks for similar returns as buying one already ready to go.

Unless you can buy that boat for close to $20K the numbers don't lie...

It’s simple. No freaking way on God’s green earth. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN.

I️ sold an amazing 2006 24Ve 2 years ago with all ballast done right and the cruise fixed (replaced) with a GPS Hydrophase unit for well under $40K with 250 ish perfect hours.

Look up StealthCowboy or TheGerman and find it. It’s done. You could buy it!

I didn’t see that it had been operated in salt water. For me that’s one of the first questions I’d ask about a potential buy. Salt water is super corrosive and literally eats a boat from the inside out. I wouldn’t buy a salt water boat unless I was ocean boating.
I also forgot about the cruise control pre 07, Tall is right, it’s garbage. A buddy had an 06 20v and you’re better off controlling it manually. Keep looking my friend. The 07 BS linked looks pretty nice. I like the colors too!

Thank you all for the great advise. You are wiser than I. Glad I posted.

Reached out Martin MS in Canada, they are going to get me more info in the 2007 24Ve. Are there any pitfalls to buying a boat in Canada? Do they negotiate the same as we do? Any other deals out there I should know about? Thanks!

That 24ve at martin as been there since mid summer so im sure considering the time of year and snow we have now they would move on the price.

I’ve been talking to the guys at Martin over the last week or so and absolutely amazing to deal with. Definitely try and negotiate the price.

Regarding buying in Canada. Getting financing from a Canadian bank might be tricky but you can do that st home and send the dealer all that stuff by distance. As long as you pay the right taxes and have the proper proof of purchase for the border you should be good to go.

Here’s another option. Looks super clean but kinda boring and a year older.

I bought an MB out of Canada. You will have to contact an import broker to arrange all of the proper BS paperwork to get it back into the USA. Nice thing is, its not really an "import" as the boat was made in the USA so the import duty burden is less. All in all, I think it cost me roughly $2500 to get the boat into the country, including transport. Was still worth it by a mile with exchange rate and the deal I got.

If you dig up my speed controller replacement writeup I did on my 2006 you can have a cruise control that is better than many factory options.

Not too worried about a speed controller. We ride the Columbia river, the water current varies between 2mph and 5mph. Makes anything GPS based super frustrating. Target RPM + a thumbs-up/Thumbs-downs has worked for more years than I have been alive.
