Many of us in years past have used Marine Hand Held VHF radios and tuned them to channel 5 during the event. I was admittedly one of the last ones to get on board with this idea (cause I’m cheap, LOL). I ended up breaking down and buying one of these https://www.cabelas.com/product/Cobr...E&gclsrc=aw.ds
I'll have to see if I can program those frequencies in ours. we use the following for dessert racing, snowmobiling coms, snow skiing, boating, hiking....etc... fully programmable with the software you can find for free. they have awesome range and are cheap enough they can get lost or broken and not worry about them
I'll repost it when I get to my desk, the mobile version isn't working right. you can search "Baofeng radio" on amazon they're 25bucks. There's an 8watt for 40ish but we've always stuck with the 5watts.
However they are considered an FM band radio but yes essentially a mini HAMM. How it was described to me was because they are under a certain wattage and if you only use certain open public channels you don't need a license....that's the "correct" answer. Now in reality every one uses them in most form of racing from desert to nascar(they make great scanners at the races) also you can get local law enforcement and fire. We've been using them for years and never had an issue with licensing.
You need to be careful with that radio. I doubt you are legal TALKING on any frequency that radio covers. The rule is. " No License is required to purchase the equipment, nor to Monitor (listen) to the many Amateur (Ham) Radio frequencies. However, an FCC License is required to Transmit on Amateur Radio Frequencies in the USA."
I'm not trying to bring you down and be all Ranger Rick. You can and will do as you want. I doubt someone is going to hunt you down on Lake Mead. Just want to make sure you know the rules. If you broadcast on some of the legal frequencies, that radio allows, it has to be a maximum of .5 wats with a non removable antenna (which that radio is not). I would imagine the races and stuff have something work out for an event situation. I don't know?
