I'll cast a vote for a drysuit (Oneill Boost -- I don't care who makes fun of me, I'm warm and dry, and it makes it pretty easy to work with the 100 rule -- if air temp + water temp = 100, I'm quite comfortable. In all fairness, we have the dual heaters and heated seats as well, which helps when you aren't in the water.
A bit pricey, yes, though I count it toward some of the best money I've spent on boating. I'm hoping to actually get some video this fall of surfing while snow is falling...

I have a drysuit and think it's the best thing since sliced bread. It is the O'neill boost. I have had it for about 12 years and if you take care of it, it will last a very long time. Store it in a plastic bag when it is dry and the seals will last much longer. I have replaced all of the seals once.
I also use a heater top when it gets a little chilly, and it is great and all, but even when the water gets a little cold, I find myself reaching for the drysuit.Be excellent to one another.

I would weigh in and say surfing in a dry suit isn't as "free" as a wetsuit or shorty in my opinion. I can handle a shorty and wetsuit until the mid-low 60s for water temp pretty easily.
It's really best for me to have both.

I run a shorty 3/2 wetsuit from about the mid/high 70's and down until the mid 60's, depending on wind and air temp. If I had a full length wet suit I would probably ride it into the lower 60's.
We have an O'Neil Boost dry suits. They are awesome awesome for chilly water, but a few things to think about:
1. On a warm day (air temp) with cold water, the thing is a furnace when riding or entering/exiting the boat. Like, OMG you want to pass out hot.
2. Stay-Puff-Marshmallow Man...lol. I wear my life-jacket on the inside because its easier to ride and you don't get that awkward "sausage" arms/neck when you are in the water. You are extra buoyant with a dry suit, but I still wear my comp vest under it.
3. You can wear what ever clothes you want under it...but it will leak a little at the seals. I started wearing less under it because of gettting over heated on good surf runs!
4. My wife always pulls her hair putting it on unless she wears a 'do-rag.

72 is cold ha ha ha ha ha ha! As bsried said, we are lucky if the lake gets much warmer.lol. Try 48, that'll make your feet go numb.
I'd say a shorty to a possible full wet but a dry suit just seems to be complete over kill for that temp. Worst case when it's still spring up here and the water is low to mid 60's I'll wear a shorty and my heater top so I have almost 6-7 mil up top. Water barely gets in.
