How much water do you need?

Was cruising in some new areas this afternoon and started think about how much water would our boats need at a cruising speed?

You probably only need 3 feet but I’d want 5/6 minimum. You need to take into consideration, waves, sudden stops, rocks, etc.

We certainly go through areas of 2-1/2 to 3 ft on the river. This is at cruising speed. I would not stop or if I had to would not take off. I would idle out...or drift if necessary. It helps to really know your waterways as well high and low times of the days due to dam releases and what have you. I believe a lot of mishaps occur when we are cruising the new areas like you described. Also the hazards underwater I bet are different in TN and all over. Do you guys have cut off tree stumps underwater? Those would scare the crap out of me.

Hahaha ^^^ we have stumps everywhere. The water is very deep but you better know where those stumps are.

2 1/2-3'?! Dang man, you're more brave than I am. Shallowest I see at the lakes I use is 5' or so. I'd guess when the boat is popping out of the hole or sinking off of plane that the prop and rudder are at least sinking 3-4' under water. I'd guess on plane at cruise you probably have a 1 1/2-2' draft.

Boat is about 3ft deep at rest on my boat...but with where my depth finder is located, I can go to 1' 8" (according to depth finder) and clear by 2" (found that out by mistake). Still get nervous anytime I see 5ft and go slow...I wont do anything but idle in 10ft or less, but i am lucky to have a deep lake for most part

Well, it's 1.5' between me and Whitley. That's not deep enough, I had to get out and push/pull. Thank goodness, there was an extra 2' of mud underneath.

Based on depth gauge, I have run in 2', with a tight sphincter for a little bit.

By the end of the season I am at 2' on the Tige gauge out of my marina without touching, but prop is churning up sand!!
