    FAE worries

We need an FAE on our 02' 23V. The smell is very strong and I get sick surfing. I am a little worried about how people on here have said the FAE has made the boat run poorly or not at all in some cases.

From what I understand we need flappers?

I understand people come on here for help when their boats are not running so does anyone with my same boat have FAE? Can I get some feedback good or bad?

    Thanks

Really happy with mine. The boat is nice and quiet and I don't get a face full of exhaust when I surf. I didn't get the flappers. I sometimes wonder if I should have got them but no problems yet.

That was another question I had. I think recently someone on here was talking about how they got water pushed in because they were not running flappers.

The wave? any difference in the wave on either side?

Second boat with FAE and never had an issue. No flappers on either as well.

FWIW, I had one on our '03 22v. We had a mudflap, so no difference in the wave. It took an extra second of cranking to start. No flappers, never got an inrush of water that I know of; at least none that ever caused a problem.

I'm still struggling to understand the water in-rush -- the air in the exhaust has to go somewhere? The water has to come in and up the pipe while the same volume of air is going down and out the pipe? The physics just isn't making sense to me, I'm only thinking there 'might' be a bit of a glug glug, but I get that now with my stock exhaust.

Even if the engine stopped at just the right moment that the intake valve on a cylinder was just starting to crack open before the exhaust was closing, that's not going to allow a rush of air out, too small a space.

Now open exhaust out the transom without a flap at all, I could see -- water in the bottom half with air out and up the top half. I just don't understand how the air can go down and out that fast?

I helped with an FAE install on 01 2100V. The boat has flappers. Never once an issue going on 3 years. Though we did have issues with the spray from the FAE effecting the surf wave as we found out the FAE like to slide in the boots and moved out of position. Some upgraded T-Clamps fixed that issue but still get some spray off the FAE when surfing (Listed Only) with a slap-on-surf-system their is no spray.
My life's journey is not ending up looking pretty, its sliding in broadside, used up, worn out, screaming "What a Ride"

No difference in the wave except for a little bit of spray from it. Not enough that it bothers me at all. For a while some guys were adding a big flap of rubber to the bottom of their swim platforms to knock down the spray and clean the wave up a bit.

I can think of 1 with a possible water intrusion, but it also did this while on trailer on a fake a lake and one person with an odd starting issue with FAE on and not there with FAE taken off. Besides that, thousands of satisfied with their FAE.

Thanks for all the info guys. We do use a fake a lake to winterize or do any boat work we need to do. Should that be a concern Chpthril? Or was that a possible one time thing for them?
We have flappers on the boat now, should I order one with flappers still or will I be able to use the ones I have on the boat now?

We do not surf listed,we have a home made gate so it sounds like we should be ok.

Retox - was the spray with the gate coming up from the cracks in the swim platform?

I would not be concerned. Too many boats running FEA's for year, getting winterized and summerized on fake a lake.

OK thanks for all the answers. I am looking forward to not feeling light headed while I surf.

KXCORKY - not the same brand boat but we put FAE on our Bu and I haven't noticed any real negatives. Lost about 1.5mph top speed but meh our boat never goes fast anyway. Little bit of spray but nothing that affects the wave. After all my research I decided to skip the flappers. I wish we would've done it earlier.

What is the reason to skip the flappers? Performance gain or just saving the $50? Sorry I went through their whole site and sent an email. I am sure I will get a response soon but I trust you guys haha

Flappers are offered basically for someone who still has a factory warranty and does not want a factory denial if something were to happen. But with design of FAE, its impossible for water to "rush" up exhaust anyway since a wave to back of boat cannot go directly into FAE exhaust since its turned down. Flapper is not gonna stop water from getting in anyway (which is why I don't think missing the flapper was that other guys issue who had thread on here a few days ago), is just made to stop a "rush" of water.

Your boat is an expensive investment in fun, pay the extra and get the flappers. I wish I had originally. While it's damn near impossible for water to get in through the exhaust I believe it's exactly what happened to my boat. Now I'm retrofitting which isn't a big deal but it's more time spent working on it when I wish I had just ordered my FAE with them. Just installed one on a friends 22VE tonight.
