2012 R20 Surf Wave- Improvement Suggestions?

Our 2012 R20 has the stock ballast. We all surf on the goofy side. To surf we fill both sides in the front (400 lbs total, I think) and the starboard side rear (250lbs, I think). With a driver and a spotter both sitting on the driver side we get an acceptable wave (note, I do not have experience with the surf wave on another boat to compare this one to, but I am able to go all the way around the 200 acre section of our lake) at around 9.8 MPH. Taps around 6. A full gas tank helps as well.

I have considered adding more ballast, so last year when we had more people with us we did some testing and had trouble getting a decent wave to form at all with the additional weight. I also noticed when we have additional people in the boat the wave washes out much easier on turns (we turn toward port as our lake does watersports counter clockwise) as well. It will wash out on turns with only two in the boat, but only if we have to turn more quickly. Sorry, no pictures of the washed out wave.

I'm all for adding more ballast if we can get a better wave, but testing with additional bodies indicates the wave is not as good with the additional weight. Any suggestions to improve the wave with more weight in the boat? Different speed? Taps setting? Anything else?

If you have the surf ballast what speed/Taps setting are you using? How do you have your weight setup?

I have a 13' R20 and I'm still learning as we go out each weekend, we either have a full boat or sometimes just a few passengers. I'm the only one who surfs goofy on my boat and it isn't as great of a wake compared to the other side unless I move passengers around. I always use a wake shaper so that helps clean up the wake especially when theres only a few on the boat, front & rear ballast full, taps at 4 going 10.5mph. Unfortunately I do not have any pictures my wake. I've actually had great results with the boat loaded but after this past weekend when I was loaded the nose was getting really low sometimes bringing in a little water so I didn't want to risk that anymore and decided it was time to add ballast and less passengers, I bought 2 350lbs fat sacs to start which came in today so I will be testing it out and will report back after this weekend.

oh btw full tank of gas all the time as we start off but we know that doesn't last very long lol

for starters, that's a decent looking wave, but you're going to want to speed it up a bit. Regarding your ballast in the rear, do you have bags that sit in the compartments or are you strictly using the hard tanks under the floor? I'm going to guess you have the bags, just judging by the wave. I'm going to say it straight out, the r20 comes with a decent factory ballast system but not quite enough, you will end up wanting to upgrade your rear bags to a fly high w004(this can be purchased from mikes liquid audio).

Now setting up the wave, You seem to have done your research and have an idea, it's just a matter of whats in the rear. What you want to do is fill the rear surfside 100% and fill both fronts, speed about 10.8-11.2 and set your taps between 1 and 4 depending on the rider.
Now that's going to get you a decent setup but you will soon want more, add the bigger bag in the rear and then run about a 400-600lb bag in the bow on top of the subfloor. This will allow you to speed up and lengthen out your wave without sacrificing height or length.
Here's the setup I described above.

Personally, I was NOT a fan of the gated waves behind the r20, i could never get it in the right place and the wave just felt soft. But I wanted more, so I purchased a taps 3 systems from Germaine Marine and wow the wave is like a whole different boat. No more running listed and switching between sides and best of all the wave is pretty dam good. I don't have any pics on me but wow.... If I were you, I would defiantly give the guys in Utah a call, before tige stops them. If you have read other threads you probably think i work for germaine and im trying to sell it, but i'm just a customer who is overly satisfied that happy with it.

      hope that made sense, Cole

          I have a 2015 R20 that came with stock surf ballast, 1600 total ballast. 200 200 front 600 600 rear.
We changed port side 600 bag to 1000 bag.
We surf regular with Fronts @ FULL, Port rear FULL, Starboard Rear about 20 - 25% full.
TAPS at 2 - 3 at 11.8 to 12.8 depending on who is surfing.

I also have been adding an additional 200lb bag up front to to make wave a bit longer.
This combo has worked great for us...wave looks a bit taller and longer than your pic.

I will include some more pics this weekend, but the additional weight has worked great!!

We have a 2013 r20 with 1600 factory ballast. Took out the two factory rear bags and got the 84" fly highs from wakmakers. Added a transfer pump to speed things up when switching between riders. This has seriously improved our wake. Usually taps 2-3. 9.4-10. Full port front and back with nothing offside except driver. Excellent wave. Goofy not as good but same parameters but fill both bags in the front. Much better than stock.

9.8mph seems very slow, that could be a large reason why wave is washing out. I know on mine anything under 10.5 the wave can wash (was just testing this weekend cause had an 8yr old boy I was teaching and trying to go as slow as possible without wash)...my normal speed is 11-11.6. Tho its a different boat than yours, would think the same concept on washing out.

Thanks for the feedback. To clarify, we only have the hard tanks in back (900 lbs. total, I think).

Looks like I should try a 1-2 MPH hour increase with a reduction in TAPS. We will have some extra people this weekend so I'll give the faster speeds a try with our standard pamore people in the boat.

The base level ballast would have been 900 total and it would include a 400# bow sac in addition to the two 250 rear tanks.

With this base level, id skip the bow weight and off side weight, fill the surf side and stack every available body over there. Im not sure the wave will be much good above 10.5 without more weight.

You need more weight on the surf side for sure. We have found that the Fly High W005 Tige sac is the best fit for these boats. They can be plumbed in to the factory plumbing.

                    Kraut,

The R20/RZR can make a pretty awesome wave for a 20ftr but you are going to need more weight for sure. I have a set of Fly High W005 sacs that Mike has suggested up for sale in the classifieds. These with a list or a suc gate would have you a nice surf wave in no time.
