Our 2012 R20 has the stock ballast. We all surf on the goofy side. To surf we fill both sides in the front (400 lbs total, I think) and the starboard side rear (250lbs, I think). With a driver and a spotter both sitting on the driver side we get an acceptable wave (note, I do not have experience with the surf wave on another boat to compare this one to, but I am able to go all the way around the 200 acre section of our lake) at around 9.8 MPH. Taps around 6. A full gas tank helps as well.

I have considered adding more ballast, so last year when we had more people with us we did some testing and had trouble getting a decent wave to form at all with the additional weight. I also noticed when we have additional people in the boat the wave washes out much easier on turns (we turn toward port as our lake does watersports counter clockwise) as well. It will wash out on turns with only two in the boat, but only if we have to turn more quickly. Sorry, no pictures of the washed out wave.
I'm all for adding more ballast if we can get a better wave, but testing with additional bodies indicates the wave is not as good with the additional weight. Any suggestions to improve the wave with more weight in the boat? Different speed? Taps setting? Anything else?
If you have the surf ballast what speed/Taps setting are you using? How do you have your weight setup?
