    Potentially buying a 1999 2100v 350 mag 389 hours

I am new to this forum and looking to purchase a 99-2002 Tige to upgrade from my 97 Crownline 182br. As my family is getting bigger, we are enjoying being together on the water more and more.

There is a 99 2100v with only 389 hours on it. I think this is low compared to my 815 hours on my 97. It looks pretty stock, no rack, no bimini, no ballast bags, and factory radio. I think I like the fact it is stock so I can add my own rack and radio suited to my tastes. I would also like to maybe applying a small wrap to update color scheme.

    They are asking $15,900.00

I am going to go look at it and test drive it soon.

What are some things I should check and look for when inspecting the boat?

Visually from the pictures online, there are no tears in the vinyl and some fading on the rear gelcoat.

    Thank you

Make sure floors don't have soft spots

Ensure shaft and strut are straight

Make sure it hits WOT no problem

Check for leaks during lake test. Usual culprit is shaft seal needing new packing. Look at rudder box as well.

You NEED perfect pass. Don't skimp on the tower. Good Acme prop helps out. The wrap is about the last thing I'd spend money on with a 18 yr old boat.

Gel coat comes to life with rubbing compound.

Price sounds a little high....unless everything is awesome/well cared for.

In the next yr or two you will probably replace the alternator, replace the steering cable, add perfect pass, get an ACME prop, add a tower, add a stereo system, go through the trailer brakes and bunks, polish the gel, repack the prop shaft, get a spare prop, replace a broken guage. Sounds like a good price but frankly I think the $25-30k boats are better deals as long as they are well cared for

We had a 98 2200v that we loved for 8 summers. Great boats but you will need to troubleshoot a little on them given the age. Ours was in great shape when I let it go. Sold it last yr

Bakes nailed it. Older boats are gonna have issues no doubt, the trick is figuring out which are the easily fixable things that you can do yourself with minimal out of pocket. The shaft seal is a good example of one of these minor wear items that just needs to be done every so often. If you run it at the lake verify that the hour meter actually works. If not take it to a mechanic to have the hours pulled. I always try to get a feel for who I'm buying from and how they'd taken care of the boat. A solid maintainance history makes me more comfortable about buying older stuff. Don't forget to ask questions about the trailer. Brakes, hub bearings, etc..
Bakes makes a good point about the price point too, by the time your done putting on a tower, prop, ballast bags, etc.. the price will be around 20. Cool thing is there are some bitchin towers on the market and you will have your pick of them!

        Thank you.
I'll check floor, shaft and shaft seal as well as steering box and gauges.
I like the room and price range of these older Tige. I am not afraid of getting my hands dirty by working on them.

If I could increase my budget to $25k, what years and models would I be looking for?
We want to be able to legally carry 10, 90% of the time only 5. We will be tubing, surfing and wake boarding.

        Thank you

I guess price may depend on where you are at in the country and supply of used boats a bit. Reason I say that is that I was just helping a friend by an new-to-him boat and $15k for a V-drive (stripped down) would be on point in our market. We looked at 2 early 2000's 221's and they both were $18k+. Both not worth it due to wear and tear or tower issues. Lots of nice ones more toward the $30k range. You know you like the 2100 limited or the 21V. Check out some early 2000's 21V's that are already done vs. the cost of adding everything yourself. An early 2000's 22V in good shape would be $30K where I am at. A 20V would work too but the 21V is much roomier. All of my info IS slighted because we love our 21V. Paid $24k in spring of 2014 with 275 hours. Turnkey with all ballast bags (not plumbed), excellent condition.

The thing I like about doing all the add ons yourself is that you can make right and make it yours. Buying a boat at the edge of your budget leaves you with whatever you bought. It also leaves with no extra for the unexpected things. A "naked" 21v in sound mechanical order is about the best boat you could hope to find.
You'll get your chance, smart guy.

Here is the boat. It might be priced a little high bit that's what negotiations are for. Plus I won't know until I view it and test drive it.

^^^^agreed. Esp if in great shape for $15k. The only problem with adding things is that even if you spend $10k on the stereo, PP, tower and ballast you will still only have a $15-17k boat when you go to sell it. I think the 98-99 Tiges are great boats. Esp with modern looking towers. I'll bet a Roswell aviator tower would be the bomb on it.

That thing looks great. I'd definitely go check it out. That gel will shine up really well.

Someone has a deposit down on it and they're lake testing it on Wednesday.

Going to look at this tomorrow morning. Price maybe a little high but looks in great condition.

That first one will be easy to make gel coat look brand new. First thing you will need is a tower so you have racks and can get bimini/shade.

2nd one looks nice and already has those things, guess it comes down to price and which was taken care of. Test them both.

Not factory graphics. Seat bottoms have been redone, not very well I might add. Platform has just been completely stripped down. Motor looks like the rest of it used too, poorly maintained. Someone tried polishing that turd. They are not good at it though. Run away.

HammerTime, What is your budget if you don't mind me asking?
My life's journey is not ending up looking pretty, its sliding in broadside, used up, worn out, screaming "What a Ride"

Does the 2003 look that bad? 20v ONLY seats 8 legally?

I have attached(hopefully this works) a few pics of the cracks. I have never seen this before. Is this a big concern or easy to repair? Should I even be worried about it? The one is on the nose and the other is on the port side about halfway back. There were a few smaller ones in a few spots including one near the mounting location of the tower.

I looked inside and out and the boat seemed pretty clean. Engine compartment was clean also. Vinyl on side might be able to be removed leaving a nice clean white hull. I know the Tige logo was pealing in a few spots.

They just did a service on the boat and tested everything including compression. They have maintenance records for the past few years. It was used on a small lake in Southeast Indiana.

Wake tower paint is flaking and could use a fresh coat of paint/powder coating.

Is the 2003 20v really only rated for 8 people? This site has it rated for 10 in the specs as well as everywhere else I look online. The plate said 8 passengers. Might be a deal breaker as me and the boss(aka the wife) were thinking it would hold 10 people

The bimini top hits the wake tower. It appears I would need to remove a support arm on the bimini and then open it and then reattach it. Is this normal?

                              So...should I run away?

                              Thank you
