Malibu boat damage

I know I shouldn't do this because it is not right to bash on other boat manufacturers, just tout the benefits of my Tige and let people make their own decision. I was reading on wakeworld and couldn't help but be aghast when I read about this poor guy who hit a stump with his Malibu and took one of the tracking fins off. He states that he had slowed down and was making a turn (he noticed the depth getting shallow).

The pic is not the best, but I am very confident that the hull looks extremely thin. I am not sure that a Tige would have had that happen.

A friend that used to sell malibus said they would occassionally get new boats in with crooked tracking fins and since they were not through bolted they would have to remove them, fill on the old holes and then re-attach the fins. He owns a mastercraft and says he would never own any other pure ski machine, though for a wakeboarding boat he says he really considers my 22v a great boat. He also said there is something about their prop shaft that always leaks as well. In fact, that is what they use at Cypress Gardens and their boats bilge pumps are on pretty much non-stop.

Sounds like it might be a common problem with Malibus since the guy had 3 bilge pumps!


BTW: I answered your question in another thread that the explosion tower is around $3K.

I think that he had ballast pumps, not bilge pumps. You can just lay a few of those on the floor and it helps a lot to empty the boat quicker. Once when I dunked by 24V at lake Mead I wish I had thought of that because it took a very long time to get her emptied.

Ok, tall, no more Bu bashing!

You'd be surprised how hitting things just right can cause major damage, although I gotta say that either he had water damage before the fin got ripped out or the fin wasn't installed properly.

I have to agree, the hull looks very thin there, less than 3/8 of an inch maybe?


He says he was going Very slow..so that seems like too much damage for Very slow.

Tige Hulls are very solid.

You beat on the side of a Tige then do it to a Bu.

Big difference in hull thickness.

That’s why Tige is not afraid to warranty their hulls for life.

I just heard this story:

A guy asked his buddy to help him get a piece of wood off his Tracking fin of his Tige. The guy dives under the boat to find a 4"x 6" piece of wood 5' long imbedded into the tracking fin. Apparently they ran over the wood the night before at about 20 mph. The fin was imbedded about 3-1/2" into the wood. When they got the wood removed from the fin they found no damage to the hull not even hairline crack.

the "boo" have that problem because they are not through bolted just zerks in the glass. does not take much at all to rip them off and cause damage. a friend who skis at cypress gardens said they fall of all the time on high speed turns. its just a bad design.IMO everyone else through bolts them i dont know why they dont. malibu are a wierd boat we have a few that i service. the fiest time one came in i couldnt believe how many screws i found in the bildge. just thought it was a sloppy job not cleaning up from factory,cleaned them out and didnt think alot about it. it came back in a few months latter approx. 50 hrs and guess what i found yep another hand full of screws. i think its been in four times total and each time i have removed a hand full of screws. then the guy starts compaining of rattles and fiberglass cracks. granted the guy didnt take care of his boat very well but it was ony a year and a half old and literally falling apart around him. i sorry just not a big fan of the boo at all.

about a month ago i hit a log about 12 ft long & 14 in wide, the front fin took most of the impact. it got bent about a 1/2 inch. the drive shaft & prop took a beating as well. i was able to idle back to dock, with no water coming in. very glad I choose Tige over Malibu.

I had the same thing happen. I didn't bend any fins, but my shaft, strut and rudder were toast.
