Wanting a 3500rpm surf boat with the weight and motor/ratio you have just might not be possible. I would try going up to a 15.5 first but the clearance Josh is super tight. Gel burn sucks especially given its a new boat. You could prop bubble it and run a prop right to the hull but man thats a ton of work. If you are up for it, that would alleviate most of your problems.

my plan was to slap it this winter. I'll get a 15.5 prop now, slap it then see where we're at.
In the mean time, Powell is beautiful this morning.

Had a great, but short, time at Powell this weekend. We had 6 adults and 7 kids at or under 100 pounds. So the boat was pretty loaded. I didn't bother running any extra ballast the entire time. So just the stock 2400. I was able to run without using the trim tab. That helped make the wave a bit bigger, but not as big as fully loaded. It was also shorter. I was still able to have fun on it and everyone else in the boat was learning, so it was fine for them. It had enough push to ride out a 360 (my one and only trick) so I had fun. Powell is a bit lower in elevation vs where I normally go. Not sure how much that mattered. I'm headed to our highest elevated lake this Saturday with a similar crew. That will be the test.
One thing is for sure. We need to open up our minds to different watersports, as Bakes had pointed out several time. My buddy brought a kneeboard and my kids had a blast on it. We will have to get one, just as soon as I can figure out where to put it. I'm also looking for a foil donation. I'm dying to try it. Bakes, you don't need yours anymore do you?

So it was an interesting experiment on saturday. We went to Jordanelle (6000') to see what would happen with our prop. Our friends were way late to get there so my family headed out by ourselves. Everytime we have been by ourselves I have filled everything we have full of water. So over 5000 pounds. This time I filled the hard tanks full and then filled the rear bags only half way full. I did not add any ballast up front. We were able to run without using the trim tab. We did use the Nauticurl. I felt the wave was very good. I rode out the best 360 I have ever done. It was a super cool feeling as I did the trick. I ride the board up the wave as I spin the first 180. At the top of the wave I shift my weight to the front of the board (now at the rear) and the board slides down the steep face of the wave as it comes around and rides out with speed. That was a fun spin.
The boat was running at 3900-4000 with this weight set up. I'm happy with that. All of this tells me I can have a wave I'm happy with, for the time being, and run the engine at a speed I'll be happy with too. Not bad.
Now it was a different story once our friends showed up. That added around 500 pounds of people weight and crushed our hopes of having the same wave we just had. I had to almost empty the hard tanks to produce speed enough to shape a wave. It was much smaller with less push. This tells me I need to have the weight in the rear, not throughout the boat. We like to bring friends along so I'm kind of back to square one. I need to be able to push the people and have weight in the rear of the boat.
So the day went from REALLY good to not at all wonderful. But then a surprise twist took it all the way up to totally awesome: My 12 year old daughter is really taking off with surfing. My 10 year old daughter wants nothing to do with any of it, besides swimming behind the boat. Well after I finished a set I asked her to surf with me (I do this every time I surf and always get a no) and she agreed. We failed to get up our first try and she said she was done. I told her one more try. We got up and worked our way into position, adjusting our feet and such. We couldn't get into a position where I could drop the rope though. We rode it for a bit then she insisted on being done. I dropped the rope and out the back we went. A while later, to my surprise, she comes up to me and says she wants to just try to surf by herself, but with the tube start. We have talked about it before, but never tried it. She got right up 4 times in a row! The look of surprise and amazement was awesome!

She was never up long enough to get outside of the wake, or get up to speed. I need to move the rope to the side of the tower to help that out a little, but we were just happy to have her show some progress. So even though the wave is not where I want it, yet, it is plenty for my kids and will be for a couple years, at least. Seeing them progress and having fun is more fun for me than having a wave bigger/better then I know what to do with. I suppose all is right with the world.
On a side note, on the way home she says she has a stomach ache and that she may have swallowed some lake water. After looking at all the pictures, and seeing her mouth wide open in every one, I agree she may have swallowed some water.
