Haha ya Louisiana has real Gators....big ones. My wife is from Florida and she think the Gators in Houston are cute little fellas, little toy gators. I keep telling the kids the gators don't like the boat noise and stay out of the river where the boats are! Hope we don't see any! Now Snakes on the other hand I have seen them from time to time but I have this little thing called an addiction to wakeboarding and being on the boat so I'm not gonna let some little snakes keep us from going out.

So when we first got to Louisiana, we found this really sweet ox bow that was always glass. Put in was right at the mouth of the ox bow. Would always comment I could not believe we had it all to ourselves. Cows didn't even go way back into it. Then I started looking around a little and decided it was a little too perfect for alligators. Off the main channel, kinda shallow, nice grassy edges. Started talking to others at the boat ramp and they would tell stories of the dogs they lost, at the boat ramp, to gators.
That of course did not stop our riding/skiing. Just tried not to wreck in the oxbow and if someone did then it was a quick turn around for pick-up....lots of power turns. Had a strict "no swimming in the ox-bow" rule. In the main channel, there was a sweet beach that we would set up shop at. I always made sure to do drive as close to it as I could to the beach as we went back and forth to scare away the gators and snakes. Also, we did not ride early AM and late PM. That's feeding time.

Coming in hot for a beach landing...Since he was kinda small, bite size if you will, we figured this was the best way to avoid gators since they like snacks too. jk

Nice! Did y'all ever see a gator? A friend of mine has been riding Where we ride and swim for 20 yrs and never seen a gator, but just down river a couple miles the river empties out in to Lake Houston and on the north east side of the lake are smaller creeks and inlets of water and I have seen gators there (but they are smaller 4' gators).
I know there are gators and we even ride early AM at sunset some days before work but I feel pretty safe. I do get a little nervous when we are the only ones out at 6:30 and I put my foot down and touch the bottom. I keep my finger crossed in don't step on something that could do some damage with their mouth.

Never saw one where we were actually riding but they were there. We went out one night looking for them and didn't see any either. Maybe should have thrown anchor and watched for a couple hours.
I can tell you one thing though, we would frequently camp on the beach. Every couple hours at night something big would make a lot of noise in the water...probably eating something else. Kept my 10mm glock with a good gunlight ready.
Still, those were some of my favorite days/nights on the water ever. Wouldn't trade them for anything. As long as your smart with gators you should be fine. Swimming in the shallows at night is a bad idea. Bringing little doggies along to swim is considered chumming.
Far more likely to get run over by a drunk, get in a car wreck, get bit by a rattlesnake than to get eaten by a gator while riding. The smaller kids near the beach was a little sketch but I literally ran the boat 15 feet from the beach every few minutes as part of my alligator mitigation program.

So we went to Dale Hollow all last week. Below is my favorite pic of my oldest son (4 yrs old) from the trip. Before the week started he wouldn't get in the water without someone being right next to him, would not go off the swim platform alone, wouldn't put his head under water, etc. Fast forward to the end of the week and he was jumping off the side of the boat and we couldn't keep him out of the water. My daughter (2 yrs old) made the same type of leaps forward in the water. It was awesome to watch the growth of their love for the water over the week!!

I don't ever want summer to end. We have been having a blast. Got my god son up surfing this year. He got up and in the first 30 seconds threw the rope. last year we had to start him off the deck. We have been doing a ton of night surfing too. I am really glad we don't have alligators. its bad enough we have snakes..
