Hopefully a not too stupid newbie question:

    Hi all,

Hope this doesn't sound too dumb, but being a new boat owner, I want to learn things the right way. Last time we were out on the lake, my wife mentioned that lots of people who were pulling their boats and PWCs out of the water would start the engines for a few seconds after the vessels were on the trailers. Seemed they were draining water out of the engines, I can guess. Is this a common practice? Should I drain water out using theis procedure too? What do you do after taking your boats out, other than wiping them down, cleaning them up and tying them down?

    Thanks!

Not too sure why you would want to do that.

I have never started the boat out of the water.

Any Water left in the engine should drain our the exhaust manifold.

I see jet skis do it on the ramp all the time. I think they do it just to irritate people with the fumes. Their main purpose is to bother people.

I've never heard of people doing it with a boat for any good reason.

No! Don't do it man! That is the best way to fry your impeller. I see people do it all the time and I just don't get it. The only thing you're going to accomplish is blowing the water out of the exhaust manifolds. Why? It's going to drain out on the way home anyways.
You'll get your chance, smart guy.

I didn't think it was a good thing to do, and I haven't done it. So thanks for the great advice...it's appreciated!

You're supposed to do it with jet skis, but not with boats.

I gotta disagree with you there, tall, jet skis are just like any other lake toy. They are not inherently bad, it's the operators you need watch out for.

I almost got run over by a ski boat the other day that was following me. I had to slow down to avoid a fallen rider and a couple of other boats that were so close together I didn't think it was safe to drive by at cruising speed. This person then proceeded to flip me off and drove right through the middle of the other boats, coming withing 25 feet of two of them.

The real problem with jet skis is that they are far more affordable so you tend to get people with less experience and less invested. This tends to make them more careless.

Nothing better than jumping the waves on my 650SX on a day when it's too rough to go out on your boat.

As dogbert said, you want to do it on Jet Ski's. It's b/c pulling the plug only drains the hull on them. That does not remove the water out of the engine.

Never, Never, Never. You will definalty wreck your impeller. Don't do it ever. Take it from someone who learned the hard way.
