Here's a heads up for all you nauticurl shoppers:

I ran mine for the first time this weekend. I ran the leash to the lifting eye on the transom. Well I guess I didn't mount it well because it fell off under way. The leash did it's job just fine. Nauticurl welds a ring to the bottom of the shaper that the suction cups fit into. There is also a hole in one ring that the leash goes into. Well, when the shaper fell off it pulled on that ring and broke at least one tack weld. The ring is now pulled away from the base of the shaper. As I pulled the suction cup back to look inside I was very surprised and disappointed that these rings are held on with so little weld. It wouldn't be a problem if the leash had been attached at another point, which I will probably do. The other option is to tie the leash to a float that is sitting on the swim deck or sun deck, ready to roll off the back of the boat if the shaper becomes UNSTUCK (see what I did there ).

I remounted the shaper and it stayed attached the rest of the day. So it still works fine, it's just broken.

If you had read their instructions.......[emoji6]

The float system is perfect, no risk of boat damage either.

They do now send instructions to tie the lanyard to a float or fender (I bought mine in Feb but got an "update" email about a month ago with these instructions)...but I have always done that cause you dont want to risk it banging against the boat if it comes off...and I was also afraid the force of the water could break the lanyard...guess I was right on that possibility

Guess I missed these instructions. Thought it was just common knowledge to attach to the boat. Anyways, the leash is way long so there is really no possibility of doing any damage to the boat if/when the shaper comes off. It seems to be plenty strong as well so I don't worry about it breaking. Mostly I just don't like the idea of that heavy shaper coming off the boat with a surfer back there. I realize there is probably little possibility of the surfer hitting it, but I've been brainwashed at work. If you can visualize a safety issue, you must do something to prevent it. I have no problems welding it up to make it stronger, so that it meets my needs.

My biggest concern is losing the device to the lake bottom. I am not worried about hitting the surfer being on opposing side and with it sinking immediately when falling off. To me the float method has the best chance of preventing that $200 miniature artificial reef.

But, I haven't had one fall off yet, either. I did test the float's ability to hold it though.

So I got a full Nauticurl suckgate test done today on my SV244, ZR409 engine with #1433 prop. Regular side surfed (I know, not a Tige....but point here is the suck gate and I really like this forum and Tige boats. In fact, the dealer I let service my boat is Tige dealer since IMO, he is the best in my area). So no disrespect to anyone here.

100% Ramfill on surf side and 80% on non-surf side to create slight list (2,250lbs....1250 per side). 100% in both rear PnP bags (1400lbs...700 each). Bow sac full at 500lbs. Surfed today for 3hrs with a friend and he brought 400lbs of lead with him. First we put it in back but it made the wave super steep with huge curl (was pretty sick looking) but it was not as long as we wanted....so we took all the lead to bow and all I can say is, wow!

Total of 4,550lbs of ballast plus 1 of us driving at 200lbs while the other surfed....11mph @ 3,400rpm had an incredible wave that was nice and long with tons of push. Both of us recovered a few times from a good 20ft back several times. Best wave I have ever had hands down. Listed I run 3,200 so I was pretty happy that adding over 2,000 of ballast only increased my rpm by 200.

Since we surfed sets of 4-6 runs and kept switching off for 3hrs straight, I was also able to greatly improve my skills today. Finally feel like I am controlling the wave rather than being controlled by it. Great time, perfect weather even tho it was a bit windy. But point is Nauticurl suck gate vs listed. With the added lead, sure I can also get my listed wave a bit better, but no doubt that adding the lead to front so there was 900lbs up there lengthened it out more than I otherwise could have unless I had a fully loaded boat with people....and being able to add around 1700lbs to rear lockers by just "slightly listing" (250lb difference) with suckgate vs fully listed (to get best wave I don't counter weight when surfing listed) made a big difference. I am sure the newer boats with surf system do it similar....but without a surf system and the 3 tabs, doubt it gets much better on THIS boat, short of a ton of people in boat, or adding another 1000lbs of lead.
I liked the Nauticurl before....but today, I got her dialed in perfectly and now, I am in love, lol. (can no longer wait to buy lead after surfing that wave today....need it NOW)

Nauticurl rocks! If you press hard and "pump" the handle a little to make sure you get all water/air out of the suction cup, I have never had it come off while surfing and have at least 10hrs+ on it. Just be sure to tie to a fender and not the boat so it does not get a "sudden jerk" that could potentially break the lanyard. (in 2nd pic...you can see the black fender on left that I tie it too)
