    House and crank battery readings

Hello all, I picked up a 15 z3 with 90 hours and spent last weekend on lake. Will take me a bit to learn the boat. As for the batteries, they both check good with voltmeter but on the screen it reads house 12 crank zero untill the motor is on, then they both show 14. Was trouble shooting a bit as with the battery switch in the first position (is that crank only) it was doing some funny things like radio cutout and screen flashing. With switch on both (or second position) all works. Trying to understand. Should crank read zero when motor is off? Thanks

Everything you said is correct. If you turn the key to on (not started) both should read 12, when running 14 as you said. One thing that is different about this boat from others you may have had in the past is the system is digital and will pull a small volt/amp even when everything is off so it is critical you turn the batteries off when you aren't using the boat. The radio and screen will give you those issues when your house battery is getting low and needs to be recharged. You should only run the boat with the battery in the first position. If you are having issues, you may have the same issue I had last summer where the wiring was done incorrectly and the isolator was not hooked up correctly. Long story short, the isolator was not isolating my crank and wasn't allowing my house battery to charge properly. Hopefully this isn't the case but if you've been charging the batteries when storing and you are having issues, I would get it checked out and it should be covered under the warranty.

Sounds like the house battery is low. When checking their voltage, what did each measure? Given this boat has 2-3 seasons on it and may have sat unused for some time while for sale, I would suggest 2 new batteries. "ON" is for general use, "OFF" is for putting the boat away and "COMBINE" is for emergency start.

Ok guys that makes sense. The batteries were low when I had the blinking screen. Once charged that didn't happen again. BUT sounds like I have abnormality somewhere. When key is on accessory or "on" before clicking engine to start, any position where screen is on but engine not running, the house battery shows 12 and crank battery shows zero on the screen. Placing Voltmeter on batteries shows both at 12.5. Once started engine, both house and crank show 14. Sounds like not normal to have the crank battery read zero?

Hard to say but ive long felt there was a firmware/soft ware glitch in the Murphy Viper system resulting in a low battery warning with helm on, engine off.

You won't get a crank battery reading without the engine running. It will show 0 until the engine is started.

^^^^ thats either a glitch or just poorly thought out program IMO. Running or not, you should display live system voltage. And to display low batt warning when engine is off, yet batteries are fully charged is also either a glitch or poor thinking.

I own a 15 Z3 and it displays the cranking battery voltage with key on engine off. You might have something wired wrong.

It does when combine is on. But when the switch is just on...... it should read power to just the house batt. Ive been told it has something to to with the prolso charge. The prolso charge is great but it has had its hare of problems, for me I want complete control so I did away with that last weekend. New switch as well which reads 1, 2, 1/2 and off. Take that thing out of the equation.

This is strange. Seems like the proper way would be for the screen to show the voltage. But it appears I'm not the only one that has it wired this way. Seems to have no effect on operations just maybe where the reading is being pulled from.

If it reads zero w/engine off and then alternator voltage with engine running, it has to be a firmware/software thing.

If its something that is driving you that crazy there are lots of aftermarket DC digital battery meters out there. you could easily mount two small ones into the plastic near your master switch and hardwire to the batteries. Then you would know OCV and alternator output voltage to both batts at all time.

One volt meter and DP toggle and you can read both on a single display with the flip of a switch. Did this in my analog gauge on my 06. Could monitor both banks from the helm.

Just went out to my boat to verify. Key on engine off does display house and crank voltage with battery selector at position 1.

Well I looked over wiring and it's beyond my skill to find where the anomalies are. If anyone has any advice. I'll make sure to check both batteries are getting charged when running.
