Many questions on new R20 purchase

Hello and thanks in advance for any comments and feedback.

We boat on a small private lake. Water depth goes to 50 feet. We are looking at 20-21 ft. boats for surfing, boarding, slaloming and occasional barefooting. We're looking new or a couple years old as we want newer surf technology.

Currently looking at the R20, Moomba Mondo, Axis A20 and possibly the Mastercraft NXT20. The Mondo comes with the Raptor 400 and we would upgrade the R20 with the 400 as well.

    Here are the questions.....
Is there a glare on the R20 display under sunlight? With no other instrumentation I am concerned that it my be difficult for the driver to see the display.
Can the boat be built without the cooler? We would prefer a walk through bow.
If I need to add additional ballast can it be reprogrammed to reflect the different size?

I have talked to a dealer that has only been selling Tige boats for just under one year. He does not have any R20's or RZR's to look at or water test. I did like him and feel that we could easily work out a deal that would be good for both of us. He gave me a price that I feel is pretty fair for the boat with the Raptor 400, depth/water temp gauge, full cover, aft walk through filler cushion and the E2 power tower. He told me lead time would be 3.5 - 4 weeks. Does this sound correct. What other options would you consider?

Aesthetically, I like the R20 best. Looks downright sexy to me. Surf reviews seem to be fairly solid. Any comments in this area would also be appreciated.

My wife and daughter prefer the Mondo. It feels a bit larger but that isn't too important because of our lake size and cabin being on the lake. We never have 10 people on the boat for hours at a time feeling cramped. I do like the Mondo dash much better and really like the sliding rear seat with seat back. I'l be seeing that dealer in a few days.

Again...surfing would most likely be our first priority but the other activities need to be factored in also.

Sorry for the long first posting and thanks for any comments.

    1. No unusual glare from my experience, some though in the right light

    2. I screwed up too many boats in my head, yes to the walk through

3 Yes you can add additional ballast and reprogram the timers and or add steel bags and not touch the water ballast at all

If surfing is your first priority I might look at the r21E

You can call me anytime and I can give you my opinion on the current line as well as give you the ballpark on some of the boats we currently have on the lot.

Not sure about the R20 but I know the R21 has an option for the walk thru bow.....

In the R20 the walk thru is the standard feature. Adding the cooler with the filler cushion is the option.

I'm not sure as to the glare, but never had an issue seeing the larger screen.

Timers can be calibrated and adjusted.

Unless you just want to spend the money the 400 isn't needed IMO. The 360 is more than enough. I had an RZR with the 303 PCM and never had a problem. Unless your putting 10 large adults in it all the time its just not needed. Save the money for the stereo and ballast.

The r20 is a great boat, it truly is. If I were to do it all over again I would really recommend jumping up to a slightly used z1 or rz2. The little bit of extra space is everything we wish for, along with a little more technology.

With either boat there will be great memories made, I just feel like you can do better with your money. Personally I like the 2015 r20 WAY better than the new ones.

With the engine, the base 360 is more than enough to push full ballast.

jack what part of the us are you located in? If you can allow the 21 foot I'd go z1 or r21 with taps 3. That boat surfs great!!!

I looked at and rode in R21 in 2016 and 2017 models this year. ONLY thing I don't love about it is the plain dash...but there are upsides to it also as not much can go wrong which all costs money. Interior on Tige boats are top of line, they have great warranty and support...and at least in my area, Tige dealer is #1, hands down and your dealer relationship makes a huge impact when you need help.
Really surprised at how incredible the wave looked in that boat (it did have the TAPS 3). Super easy set up. (and I was comparing it to my SV244 which throws a hell of a surf wave). For what its worth, I concur with the engine size too...the boats I was in both had the 360 and with a 20 or 21ft boat, it will be plenty unless you are at really high elevation, even then you are probably good with the right prop. It was VERY snappy in that boat and zero issues with full ballast and 5 people (the 2016 had been upgraded with all the PnP and we had 5 adults in it, still great power and zero hesitation). Don't know how much the upgrade to the 400 costs....but just so you know for down the road on resale, while the 400 might attract a little more attention cause of that upgrade, you will NOT recover your money on it. Never do with options like that.
              Good luck with search

                Thanks for the responses.
@elevatedconcept - good to know that glare shouldn't be an issue. I can go 21 ft on my lake but I like the R20 picklefork better that the R21 bow although that wont be the deciding factor.
@boardman74 - I go back and forth on the motor upgrade. I slalom and barefoot and often pull 2 barefooters and need the speed and torque. I'm a "better safe than sorry" guy and don't want to be on the wrong side of the power fence.
@bsreid - I too like the 2015 way better. I want a surf system that makes it easy to transfer.
@CarFanatic - We live in Northeast Ohio. Our lakehouse is in the Northeast/Central Ohio area. The dealer i am working with is 3.5 hours away.

As an aside...I've enjoyed reading past posts on this sight. I must say that there are a couple guys with vast knowledge who give advice and help. Hats off to them for taking the time to share their knowledge. If I end up with a Tige I know where to go for help.

Anywhere near the Lake Milton, Ohio area? It's off the I-76 about 1/2 way between Youngstown and Akron.

I live in Akron and have been to Lake Milton many times in the past. Our lakehouse is in Millersburg, Oh in Holmes county which is about 1.5 hours southwest of Milton.

I just went thru the same scenario with a friend of mine who was looking to buy the similar boats. Take my opinion for what it is as I own a RZ2 (as I to love the look of the picklefork bow as well) when reading your questions it just brings me back to each boat manufacturers "selling tools vs Tige"
Digital dash vs switches and knobs as back up, Tige has the most simplified dash and now owning my boat for 3 years the other boats look way to cluttered and confusing. And the reality is you'll rarely even look at your dash as its all about feel when driving a boat. I to would say no need to upgrading the engine, I have the 350 and its plenty of power.
Loads of options for upgrading ballast weight. The NXT20 should be taken off of your list as it doesn't allow extra ballast to go under the side benches and to be honest it was the boat my friend wanted to buy but after we looked at it, its now the least preferred out of your list.
Sliding rear seat seems like a good idea but ask anyone who has one and see if they still use it.....with kids and adults walking around (trying to get a towel, sunglasses, drink, etc)and people are now forced to step on the side seats to get around the bench when moved towards the driver. Everyone on our lake stopped using it and has it slid back to the original position. Kinda similar to the switching the wave while surfing, cool to do once or twice but after that it'll never be used again.
Last comment, so glad we went with the 22' as any extra space is always a good thing as the last thing you want is having to upgrade 2 years later as you bought a boat that now too small. Reminder about Tige as the bow is much larger then everyone else (fits 4 kids) so the back of the boat feels a little smaller compared to the others but kids always want to ride in the bow to get away from the adults so in my opinion well worth the larger size upfront vs the others that seemed like they'd only fit 2 kids.

"...for surfing, boarding, slaloming and occasional barefooting"

Aren't we all. barefoot/slalom and a killer surf wave are kinda tough to get. Wave needs weight = tractor prop = there goes your barefoot speeds. Since you live on the lake I recommend a pimped out wake boat and a beater, closed bow ski boat to scratch the slalom itch. You can get a nice older slalom for easily less than $10k.

Sure, there are boats that will do both but there is a reason dedicated surf boats weigh 6000+ lbs and have 4K worth of ballast and ski boats weight 2800 lbs and people run them at 1/8 of a tank of gas. Just different tools. The further you get from each type, the worse the wave or wake will be.

Lake house with wake boat and closed bow ski boat is my dream.

Have you looked at/considered something like this? I would go for a z1 over the r20 after owning one myself. http://www.onlyinboards.com/2015-TIG...nia-50755.aspx

                          RZ2? http://www.onlyinboards.com/2015-TIG...ada-62455.aspx

My lake allows 2 motorized boats/pwc's. My wife will either divorce me or stab me in the back if I sell "her" boat. The new boat needs to replace my older Nautique which is used for slaloming and barefooting. I need this boat to be able to do the other watersports too. I can't sneak in 3 boats and I'm not ready to give up the wife yet.

R20 Is a great boat You wouldn't regret ! I went in the same path as you last summer. I spent almost the entire summer testing, reviewing and compare almost every brand and models like you. (Axis A20, nxt20, mondo, Moomba helix and few others)
The advices I can give you is Axis feels very cheap for the price.. really. I will never recommend a friend to go Axis
Moomba are great seriously, more basic/ overall boat. Well built for the price. But you know Tigé had his own touch!
It's not for nothing that Tigé are the no1 versatile wake boat.
At the end of September I made my choice. Finally end up with an RZR.
Like you i was looking for an r20 upgraded motor 400 but my dealer had a leftover rzr it was the last one and he made me a price I couldn't refuse haha.
Rzr have several options that I wasn't considering at start but once you have them you found out that they are pretty useful
                              Good luck!
