What would the warranty be on the used boat?
Can you make use of that questionable 7 year warranty + $3,000 off boat show promotion?

What options on the '15 Z3 vs a the new R23?

I like to play moneyball with my fun. I'm not sure I would get $8000 more fun out of a used Z3 with a partial warrantee. who cares about a $3000 vs $7000 stereo setup. I do like the alpha Z tower, premium vinyl and instrument cluster but that is not what determines how awesome of a day I have.

Still, $8000 is not a lot when you factor in everything else. It's not like your looking at $90,000 vs $35,000 boats. I say you go with whichever boat sings to you rather than whichever one will satisfy the inner accountant but still make you look longingly every time you are out. If you decide to go cheaper rather than what you really want, then go for something in the 35-45k range.

This might seem scatter brained but here goes.

        The question I would pose...

How much is being in a brand new boat with your colors and your specific options with a 7 year warranty worth to you and the family ?
If its worth 8k then I would spend the 8k and know that with that type of purchase, I got what I wanted and what was most important to me.

If being in a boat that no one else has been in isnt that important then I would get the boat that has the most features that you like. In your case it would be the z3 I would imagine, unless you really tried to build a high end R23.... at which point it isnt roughly 8k anymore...

Just keep in mind that an r23 is going to have some neat stuff in it out of the box as undoubtedly the brand tries to incorporate more higher end finishes etc which in turn raises the overall value of the boats across the line year to year. I cant give you details yet on exactly what that is but I would imagine when comparing 15z3 to 17r23 the gap might be less then you think in term of overall features.

Is the need to be in a boat that no one else has been in before really a thing?

I love gently used items, letting someone else take the proverbial "bath."

For you its obviously not.. Others dont like the unknown... did the previous owner run it out of the water a ton... did they run the wrong oil, did they have sun tan lotion all over the seats..... some like to know they are the first and only owner.

I dont like crack, others do........different strokes for different folks.

So yes, it is undoubtedly a need for some...

If you are educated, deal with the right people and buy correctly, their is no proverbial bath. Go in educated and you can come out unscathed.

Agreed. "Gently used" encompasses "no" to all those questions for me, but there always is that risk.

For me, life is a risky affair

I think of it this way: I buy a used boat, I save 20 grand. If some moron ruined the motor and I find that out later, I take 10 grand of the 20 I saved, and slap a new motor in that pig.

But you're right, we are all different! That's what makes life fun.

The used boat market is such that most people who have done a decent job on the purchase make out really well on the back side. As boat values climb so does the used market.

Unless you are getting hammered on the front, a 20k difference in a year or two old boat is way over stated.

I beg to differ that there is no bath on brand new. C'mon now! However, if the buyer simply finances, then trades and finances again, it really has no practical meaning. If you buy that baby outright, you're bathing at least a bit.

You are right, either you like risk or you dont. I dont mind it, but other do, my wife for one.

The flip side is, you have to deal with said problem, and worse the day at hand when it lets go, leaves you stranded and your wife is in your *** sideways. Then you have a boat with a question mark.......... what else did that said idiot do? Its all hypothetical, but the reality is some dont want to deal with it whether you or I would or not.

Some would rather spend the extra, get exactly what they want from colors of stitching on the seats then settle and save.

                          Others could care less..

There is not a 20k bath brand new currently on most top boats.

Look at all the 15 zs selling for 75-80k.... currently.... sure maybe some paid retail and spent 100k and in that case refer back to my earlier statement. For those who go in, deal with the correct people and are educated buying outright or not the used market has made the hit way less then perceived.

Way over stated? Maybe a little.

Lets use a $120K out the door RZX. I drive it a bit, decide to sell it. I am not getting $110K out of it when new ones are $123K the following year. No way! I am going to eat that thing down to $100K, am I not?

But, as stated, I don't play that game. Too spicy for me.

Financing a boat is actually what spins people upside down unless they have stellar credit, are getting money on the cheap and know to get in and out every year or two.

Hold a boat for 10 years on 7% and then we can start talking about that 20k+ number you tossed out.
