    Thinking About A New Boat

I think we reached the limit of the surf wave from our 21V this summer. We had the boat weighted so much this summer that it couldn't get up to speed. We slowly removed weight until it could get to surf speed. With that weight and a few different suckgate designs we ended up with a great wave. Far better than I ever thought possible. We rode that wave and had a great time with it. My kids would be very happy with it for then next 2-3 years I'm sure. I have found myself feeling a little bored with it. I'll admit to being inexperienced as a surfer. I have never ridden any other wave, but mine. Seeing other waves and many video's I think I could have a lot more fun with a newer boat and a bigger/better wave. My wife doesn't care one way or the other about the wave, but she would like more room on the boat. We try to have as many people in the boat as we can. 9-10 people is very common. After riding in out boat listed and then evenly weighted, we will not list a boat again. That means our next boat will have some sort of TAPS 3 surf system.

Everything I know tells me a Z3 is the right boat. Even if I could afford a new boat I don't think I could ever justify buying new. I guess I would say a budget of $70K. This puts me in a 2012-2014 Z3. I could build a "TAPS21" surf system for one of those. Once I did that, is there any reason to think that the surf wave would not be the same as a 2016-2017 Z3? All else is equal, right? Maybe some ballast bag adjustments?

In that same price range I could maybe get a new R22. It's a bit shorter. Would we feel that? Will it give me the same or similar surf wave as the Z3? I hate the R dashes though. Big Time!

The Moomba dealer is right down the street from my work. I pop in there often for all my marine needs. I am really liking the Mojo more and more. Moomba is the "cheap" version, like the R series. Reading up on them some people can't get a wave out of them no matter what they do. I have also read that from people about their Tiges. I know that one at least deserves a test drive, and I'd be sure to bring my ballast bags along to see what extra weight does. A new Mojo is very close in price to the used Z3's. The Mojo has a few nicer features than the older Z3.

In the end, I don't really care about the features of a boat, other than the surf wave. My wife wants a boat that looks new and nice. My kids really want a boat, "that sparkles". I want a wave that will get me in the air. I know that that involves a skill level I don't have yet, but I hate to think of getting another boat that wont get me there either. I know the Z3 could do that. Will an R22 ever be a comp boat? Doubt it, but is that because the wave is sub par? I would really like to stay in the Tige family, but I'm UNSTUCK. See what I did there?

So if you were going to drop $70k on a boat today, which one would you go after, and why? Thanks!

        UNSTUCK,

Good luck with the search. Since you're asking for advice, here is mine...

You mentioned you didn't necessarily want to buy new. With that said, get a 2015+ Z3 with AVX. There are a few in Texas with approx 200 hrs for sale for mid $70's and in exceptional shape. This boat will throw a beautiful wave on either side, if you don't mind listing the boat to 7*. You may miss out on some flake options, but the boat will have a Raptor motor, Tige Touch2, which was introduced into the line in early '15.

The R series boats throw phenomenal waves, and would be equipped with Taps 3. However, if in the same ballpark as a used clean Z3, id take a Z3 all day.

The Moomba guys in our club don't speak highly of their surf waves, but mainly wake board and have been happy overall with the boat, knowing that the price reflects a lower tier boat and there would be some compromises.

If you decide that new isn't out of the question, take a hard look at the RZR. This boat amazes me all the time and packs a lot of features and make a heck of a wave!

Good luck in your search and keep us posted. The Tige family is the BEST family!

9-10 people on a regular basis means a 23 foot or larger boat. I'm thinking RZ4, Z3 or 24Ve would do the trick nicely.

I had a 2014 Z3 with vx and traded it in on the 2015 Z3 with AVX and although I had problems with the 2014 I have had no issues with my 2015 and I would definitely buy again!!!

Mine was around $90,000 new loaded up pretty good I think you could get one in the low $70,s at winter pricing.
shop nation wide if you don't find what you want locally.

I think if I get a used Z3 I would want it without the AVX or VX. That way I'm not wasting money on a system I would want to replace with TAPS 3 (a home made version of course). So to me that says 2012-2014. I have not run across a 2015 Z3 for $70k. Remember, I dont want to list with ballast. Only from what happens with tabs. The RZR is too small. What are the compromises with the Moomba due to it's price? I hear its a super solid boat. There's a chance I might go elsewhere for a boat, like many on here have, but just like them, I'd like to stay in the family.

I'd be interested in a RZ4 as well. They seem to be the most expensive for each year though. Does it put out the same wave as a Z3? Based only on the wave, RZ4 or Z3?

                Thanks guys!

                    Unstuck,

Check out this RZ4. Supposedly the dealer has installed taps 3 on it already. It is a leftover from 2015, I was interested in it but decided not to pull the trigger. I talked with them a few months ago and they still had it. I'd think being a 2015 you could get a killer deal on it.

Could you be more specific? What was loose on it? Bad design or issues with that one boat?

Dash and partitions seemed flimsy. Moved more than my Tige or MB when bashing waves. Seats seemed hard. I don't know, it just gave an overall less solid impression while underway. Just not super "tight."

                        Opinion.

I was exactly at the same place past few months.
The first advice a can give you is test drive them. Its really important.
When i decide to buy my new boat i've tried at least 4 different boat on the water. Moomba, axis, MB Sport and Tige.
I have made a complete thread called my top 3 2016 boats comparing my 3 prefered in all cotegories. Sincerely if you primery surf.. go Tige. Moomba's are good overall boat yes, but never compete with the tige surf wave unless you double the weight than your tige. Its a huge fuel economy. Even with the interior and technology.. moomba is way cheaper than tige.
Yes Z3 is an awesome boat. But the new RZR avx or even taps3 push an amazing wave. You can be very suprised if you go try it. And for my experience i will more consider spending a little more for a new than a used one just for the warranty.
If you buy a 2014, warranty stop problably 2017 so next summer.. and with 2016 its the new full 5years tige warranty its a really good thing.

And if you find a 2016 tige you like you surely gonna have a hell of a deal in this time of the year.

                          Good luck !

For 70k, I buy an MB all day long. Could get darn close to new F22 or B52 23. Holdovers are definitely out there.

I bought a new demo F24 Tomcat a year ago for $51000 out of Canada--a freak deal. Interior is so massive. I added $4K GSA to it and some 1100 bags. I still am under $57K with all additions and transport.

A consistent 8-9 man crew is going to be tight in any Tige. Great lake friend has an RZX, and 9 people is cramped. I really think it has to do with the playpen making the interior seem smaller. The Z3 is a great boat, but not very big on the inside for sure.

I loved my 24Ve, such a great boat. But it truly gets crushed by the F24 I have now. Never seen a better surf wave--seriously, and that is comparing to the same very dialed RZX. Any boat that has a world class surf wave is going to take a ton of weight. There is no other way to get to that endpoint. Regardless of brand.

However, its up to you of course! I have had a couple brands and been in many more. On a 70K budget, it gets narrowed down to the best value proposition.
