    Finally upgraded

Finally decided to upgrade, and when I say that, I mean the wife finally let me. Took the old '02 20i in and was looking to order a '17 R20 and left with a '16 Z1. Was pretty sad to see the 20i go but someone is going to get a awesome older boat. Never had a boat with ballast before so any tips or pointers will be greatly appreciated. Still riding on cloud 9, go out to the barn every few hours just to look at it. HA. Will be taking it out this weekend and will post more pictures. Enough rambling, here come the boat pictures.

Oh don't I know that feeling... both the can we and then the we did. Isn't funny all the ridiculous intellectual justifications we make along the way. The truth is if you want it, can afford it and you use it then you should get it. Congrats. A very striking looking boat.

We went from an 05 Yamaha jet boat to a new 2015 R20 with Surf Ballast.
We fill front port and starboard ballast full and we ride left foot forward, so we fill aft port full and sometime we will fill some of the aft starboard... maybe 25 - 35%.
We have TAPS2 and that we set on 3, we get a nice wave to play on with that between 9.6 - 10.4 mph.

You probably have TAPS 3 in which case you can basically fill aft ballast equally and use the T3 for left or right surf.

Fill the rears full, add around 200lbs extra and then fill the fronts 60% to start and go up from there until the wave suffers. Taps 3 at 1 and taps at 3-5 depending on who is in the boat and what type of wave you want. Start at 11.2 and go from there. The more rear weight the faster you will be able to surf.. this is at 12.5mph.. 16 z3

Congrats man. My wife gave up years ago trying to talk me out of new boats. Eagerly awaiting the Friday arrival of my new one now.

Carr5779, that is a beautiful boat. I saw it last Friday when I was up at Eagle Marine picking up ours from service. What lake do you guys go to? We are at Eagle Mountain almost every weekend.

                          Congrats man great looking boat!

                          Few Tips with Ballast:
                          1. When you fill the ballast for the first time, (edit..not every trip just the first time you fill) do it at the dock fill everything and drain everything check the bilge frequently just to make sure you don't have any major leaks. If all checks out then go play!
                          2. Ballast weighting is a game of trial and error. The Z1 can produce quality wakes and waves just takes a little playing around to dial it in.
                          3. I am not sure how the break in period is with new boats and loading procedures so check with your dealer about running full ballast on a brand new motor they may advise against it. Just something to look into.

Again, congrats and post some pics when you get on the water!
My life's journey is not ending up looking pretty, its sliding in broadside, used up, worn out, screaming "What a Ride"

Thanks for all the tips, especially checking the ballast the first time.

TX_16r21, we live in Lubbock but the boat stays at Possum Kingdom most of the time, save for the occasional weekend trip to Alan Henry.
