2013 RZ2 Starter Woes (deperate to get back on the water!)

I'll try to make this long story short.

We bought our boat where we live in Vancouver BC but we use it at Shuswap Lake - 300 miles away. There is a Tige dealer 500 metres from us (Captain's Village) but they won't touch the boat because we didn't buy it from them. We have been using a local mechanic who started out great but has begun to let us down consistently. His last failure was to give us back our boat without re-attaching one of the ballast lines. We put the boat in the water and began filling - but of course we were swamping the boat.

This fouled the blower, the bilge and finally the starter.

The boat was towed across the lake to another marina to have their mechanics deal with it. They can't figure out how to get the starter out without raising the engine. Our previous mechanic (the one who now lets us down) swapped it on our dock in a couple of hours. The new guys say it will take 8 because of lifting the motor.

I sent them Tige's number after Harvey at Tige told me it can be done without raising the motor - so hopefully they will get some guidance.

Has anyone else run into this problem? Can it be done without the motor being raised?

I also have seen mention of moving the starter so it no longer lives in the bilge. Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks in advance for the guidance! Gotta get back to surfing!

Pretty bad that Captain's Village won't help you out. Doesn't matter if you didn't buy the boat from them or not. You're a customer that is willing to pay and if they serviced you well enough you may be willing to purchase your next boat from them or at least consider purchasing from them....brutal. Talk to any local automotive shops The PCM motor is just a late 90's Vortec motor. If one guy can get a starter out without pulling the motor anyone else should be able to as well. If the guy that let you down did it before you may want to just suck it up and have him do it again. Sometimes the simplest of conversations can go a long way to clear the air.

Otherwise, you could take it to Seca Marine or bring it back to the valley to Redline.

I have heard horror stories about cabtains village.

Take it to Seca Marine at Wood lake. Thats only 100 kms away from you.

+3 for Seca. They can do most work quickly.

x4 for Seca. Only place my RZ2 goes. Talk to Andrew-service manager

Thanks for the mechanic advice. We are giving Shuswap Marina a chance at this point. So far they have been great - assuming they can sort out how to replace the starter.

Does anyone have any info on that process?

Also - has anyone moved the starter to a different location out of the bilge?

I had a bad ring gear, so when the motor was pulled, boatwakes (a boat mechanic and to member here) had the ring gear modified to accept a top mount starter. Oem location is brutal. On mine I would bet you need to remove the exhaust muffler to have any chance at removal.

                Thanks!

So not an easy job to move the starter - as I suspected.

Is it the 409 motor(6l)? I have the Pcm zr6 which is the older 6l but stil the LS style motor. I will try to find the thread about that starter.
