Tower Speaker Review

I currently have 4 rev 8s on my tower, 2 of them need to be replaced (long story)...

Should I buy another pair of Rev 8's ($1050) OR a pair of slightly used Pro 485 HLCD ($1100 for the pair), and put them in-between my 2 rev 8s?

So I can have standard 4 Rev 8s. OR 2 rev 8s and 2 Pro 485 HLCD. IT would cost me about the same.

You will need an amp like the Syn-4, to drive the pair of pro-485, so factor that in.

Is there a reason the rev-8's in question cannot be returned to working order?

Another option, sell the remaining pair of rev-8 and add those funds to the $1050 you are prepared to spend on another pair of Rev-8, and get a pair of Rev-10. May not even need a new amp and would gain more mid-bass output and deeper mid-bass.

My current ones are old and were left out from the previous owner, cones are torn.. They don't sound great, and my guy said its a matter of time before the weather eats them up more...

I can pick up a Syn-4 for right under $400. Are the Pro 485 HLCD worth it?

Are you saying sell my 2 working Rev 8s and just buy 1 pair of Rev10s? Only have 2 tower speakers? Or just have a pair of 8s and 10s on the tower?

Just want to make sure we are talking Rev series or the original Pro series. Replacement parts are available for both if needed. However, we have not seen an age or weathering issue with the Rev series, and just now beginning to see some with -8 year old pro series.

They are the original Pro Series I guess. They Old, not actual Rev 8. My boat is an 08', 3rd owner. Maybe 6.5"? Two of them look like the pic below (I painted the grills black).

So right now I am going to get the whole boat rewired (its a hack job now), and will put up 2 new Rev 8s. They guy told me he can rewire the whole thing with proper gauge wire and put up a pair of Rev 8s for $2300. Then whenever I want to buy another pair of Rev 8s I can just throw them up and take the old Pro series ones off.

Then I saw the Pro 485 (2 pairs) slightly used for around $1100/1200. Didn't know if that would be a better option, with me spending a little extra for another amp to power these.

What you have pictured is a Pro series and im pretty sure its a Pro-60. Knowing exactly what the other other pair is, is very crucial in making a future suggestion. Knowing the amp driving them would also be nice.

Having had Rev8's on our R20 and now having Rev10's on our Z3 I would strongly suggest rev10's... Much fuller sound and only slightly more cost..

Thril, its a POS kicker not sure exactly what. I was told I strongly need another AMP as well. It will all come in time, I just cant afford the everything at once... I think I may go with the Rev 10's as stated above. Leaving me with a pair of Rev 10s and a pair of the Pro 60 as you say for now.

I think the functionality will be ok, as I will add an amp as needed, and in a few months take the pro 60s down and add another pair of Rev 10s. Im just worried about it looking "weird" with the Rev 10s and the pro 60s..... Thoughts?

One thing to consider is the size of the rev10s......

I've had both, for me personally the trade off in headroom in comparison to rev 8s is not enough when comparing sound.

I can tune the system I little differently and add a little more to the sub and be just fine.

Pointless. Pull the 60's as the 10's will outdrive them anyway. Sell the 60's, run a pair of 10's and add another pair down the road. And you absolutely don't need 4. 2 at 375+ watts is stupid. Pm me for info on a great price for new.

Ok, back to the topic. Kaase, sounding like you have tow pair of Pro-60, if they all look like the pic posted. I would not suggest mixing smaller and larger, coaxial and HLCD. So, no matter what you go with to replace the torn pair, I suggest you pull the remaining pair of Pro-60. It makes wiring and amp selection 10X easier. Given the small increase in price between the Rev-8 and Rev-10, the Rev-10 is a very well worth consideration.

Amp wise, dont be so hard and that 8 year old Kicker, its still chugging along right?. very well made quality amp. Ive got TONS of satisfied Kicker customers. I keep about 8K worth of Kicker marine gear on live demo in the shop. For a single pair of Rev-10, the Syn-4 is a perfect amp. However, you would be adding a 2nd amp, if you decided to later add a 2nd pair of Rev-10. If a 2nd pair is a possibility, then I would consider going with the SD-2. Plenty of wattage and will drive 2 pair.

One of my previous boats had Kicker amps and it was my best sounding system, so depending on which amp you have, it may be pretty decent still. I second what CHP said about that.

Those pro 60's were horrible sounding compared to what you can get nowadays. I love REV 10's and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. I had a pair of REV 8's briefly and they can be a very solid speaker as well, but if headroom isn't a problem, bigger is better.

Yes the Kicker Amp still works. My guy told me I might as well keep the kicker while I can since im on a budge.. So I will do that.

I would absolutely run the kicker, until the budget is ready for the proper amp.
