For anyone with smaller kids wanting to get up on their own we had some success with my 6 year old utilizing a tube. He's now hooked and won't stop asking to go.
Pretty simple: put mom in the water to hold tube down/steady and position board/feet placement (last one is important), nice easy/slow pull since kid is already "on top" of the board, cheer him/her on.
Now that he's used to getting up we will reposition his feet so he can stay up longer and actually drift back into the wave.
4 year old says she's trying next weekend....
