    2000 21v getting a new engine....what ?'s to ask..

So, I purchased my boat Jan. 2015 from a dealer down in Alabama. The boat was sold under consignment and the shop had just replaced the block on the boat due to the previous owner not winterizing the boat properly. Thankfully the block came with an 18 mo warranty after purchase of the boat.

Not sure if you guys remember but at the end of the season last year the engine hydrolocked the very last time out. Well, the shop I take my boat too cleared it out, ran it, etc and then put it up for the winter. They also dropped it in the tank and ran it up to temp before I picked it up this spring just to make sure everything worked from last fall. Obviously it checked out for them and I grabbed the boat. Well, we dropped it in the water over memorial day weekend and I didn't get it past the no wake bouy before the temp gauge started to climb....I quickly turned around and coasted back to the dock and shut her off.

Dropped the boat back off at the shop..hey contacted the warranty company that the new block was covered with and the company authorized my shop to dig into the engine to see what was going on....After pressure testing the exhaust manifolds, head, etc they determined that it's something wrong with the block and the warranty company agreed that it needs replaced. They told my shop to stop diagnosing the old engine and that they will send a new crate motor out since that will be cheaper to replace than swapping all the old parts to the block, etc.

Anyway, I haven't spoken with the warranty company yet but I'm being told that since it is now officially a warranty claim that is covered, I will now be the one dealing with the warranty company. I BELIEVE the company was ATK or something along those lines...anybody have any experience with something like this? Any good questions to ask, issues to push, etc?

      Lee,

Any working experience or info, good or bad, about this company and anything to watch out for?

On another forum some people like ATK better than Jasper. I have only used Jasper reman engines.

Well, I guess thats good news...still waiting to hear what the final verdict is if it will be a long block or crate motor....hopefully will help with the resale..my shop is really offering up some heavy incentives to get me into a R21 if I sell my 21v.....

Great little update to this thread....

Apparently ATK sent the wrong motor out....I guess there is an 8 bolt version and a 12 bolt version of the Merc350....I had the shop go ahead and order new risers/manifolds, et c so it would be a completely new motor....apparently when they went to put the risers on and button up the motor for water testing today they realized that ATK sent the wrong version of the motor.....now, ATK supposedly alrady put another on the truck this morning and rush shipped it but this is getting really frustrating at this point...

Can someone with a little more experience tell me if this was something taht should have been caught earlier?

              perhaps a vortec\pre vortec issue.

Ok so got an update on what happened. Apparently my boat has the 8 bolt intake manifold which is the fuel injected version of the motor. ATK sent the 12 bolt intake manifold version which is the carbureted version of the motor.

At this point I just want to be on the water and now ATK is requesting pictures from both engines, etc before they send the correct motor out...I just had to cancel my summer boat vacation because of this

It will be nice to have a new engine in the boat once this gets sorted out just sucks that I will probably have lost 1/2 to 2/3's of the season before this is resolved.....

I think GM changed tho intake bolt pattern in 1992 to the 8 bolts.

Lee your probably correct. I BELIEVE we got it all sorted out and the correct motor is on a truck....ATK's communication process is sub-par to say the least and causes a lot of confusion but I everything is hopefully straightened and I should be on the water end of next week....
