"New" boat issues, looking for advice

    I purchased a 2008 Tige 24VE with the MP 340
from a dealership last fall. 156.4 hours on the meter when I picked it up, currently at 159.9. I have had it out 3 times. I let my buddy pull it off the trailer the first two times, he mentioned that it idled a little funny right away, and died once, but started back up and ran fine after it idled a bit. I figured this was maybe normal and after I burnt off the fuel that sat in it all winter it would get better. Fast forward to tonight. I pulled it off the trailer, it died once, started back up and idled a little funny for a few minutes, again maybe this is normal when they are "cold"- air temp around 70. Got up to 180 by the time i picked my girlfriend up from the dock (seems hotter than normal operating to me, but I didnt think anything of it) and as I went to take off and got to about half throttle it started to run weird, I lost power, and the dash started a continious beep, but display said nothing. I tried to give it throttle, and it acted like it wouldnt let itself go past an idle speed. I turned it off, let it sit for a few minutes, it started right back up. Temp still around 180, dropped to about 145 as I got up to speed. I cruised around and played with the throttle for awhile and everything seemed fine. Decided we would try surfing, I got my pump out and was messing with that, and let the boat idle, about 5 minutes later I went back to the helm and the dash said "temp 210, threshold 205". I shut it off, kept the blower on and opened up the engine compartment, and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Went to start it and it turned over for about 5 seconds and then click, dash wouldnt even start up at this point, so I had a buddy bring a jump pack out, and we came up with the same result, just a click, and a few times nothing at all. We towed back to my buddys dock and his dad who was at one time a boat mechanic came down to the water to help, starter was getting power to start, he figure it got hot due to a bad "fresh water pump" (impeller?) and was vapor locked and that it should turn over as soon as it cooled down. After it cooled down for a few minutes it turned over for about a second and at then the starter just started to spin. Pinion gear i am assuming? We then towed it back to the boat ramp and its now home.

    So questions are-

Does it sound like those 2 things are my only problems at this point?

How about the odd running on initial start up?

Should I have done anything differently? Maybe it would have been good to get up to running speed when it got hot to cool things down?

What should I expect the dealer to do? They said they went through and checked everything out before I purchased it. They did say they didnt have the opportunity to water test it, but they were confident everything would be fine, and that if I had problems early on they would take care of me. Thoughts?

    Cost of a starter?

Any help or knowledge would be appreciated, I know very new to boats and know little about them. Frustrating that I have only gotten 3.5 hours on, and its a 4 hour trip to the dealer 1 way. Oh and its supposed to be in the upper 80s, low 90s through the weekend.

    Thanks

Sounds to me like you have multiple issues. For sure you're running a bit hot. 160 should be the normal temp. A simple thing to try there would be a new thermostat and/or a new impeller. All the other issues could be any number of things - ignition system, bad sensor(s) or an ECM problem. There's a decent chance it's a combination of things. Unless you're a marine mechanic with all the tools diagnostics and have loads of time I recommend taking it back to the dealer. Hopefully they'll honor his word and look at it for free.

My engine once hydro locked after over heating, that's water in the cylinders! Generally, the starter cannot turn the motor over if there's water in it. Considering the starter issues your describing, might want to pull the spark plugs to confirm there's no water in there.

Headed to the dealer in the morning. Anyone else have any opinions on what I should expect from the dealership? Have never had problems so soon with something used from a dealership, really unsure of if I should expect them to fully cover what ever is wrong, or possibly just parts or labor, or nothing at all. Definitely did buy from a dealer rather than private for peace of mind and hope that I would be covered in the case of any early/immediate "failures".

Its kind of a tricky situation. You bought the boat in the fall so lets just say 7-9 months ago. You've put hours on the boat, I know not a lot but it doesn't take long to damage something. I've seen new boats come back mangled under a couple hours. Saw a guy beach a go fast boat Saturday on a concrete wing dam less than an hour after the dealer launched it for him.

The dealership has no way of knowing what you have or haven't done to this boat after possibly 9 months post sale. Unless you have in writing a warranty, forcing them to do anything isn't going happen. Most dealerships will stand behind used stuff for about a month in my experience. Your way past that time frame. Without knowing exactly how long you are post sale and assuming its been 7-9 months then factoring you bought an 8 year old used boat, I'd say I would be happy if they did anything to help. Like I said I don't think you are going to have any legal recourse unless you have a warranty in writing. I bet if you look at you contract is says "as is" somewhere.

Don't want to be a debby downer but I just had literally all those symptoms twice and both times it was due to hydrolock.....

I am kind of beginning to feel like you a correct, and its hydrolocked. I should have pulled the plugs when I had it home, but its currently at the fiberglass guy and going to the dealer in the morning. If it is hydrolocked does that mean I'll be lookin at a motor job? I suppose that chance is higher if it has sat all week with water in a cylinder or cylinders.

My engine survived being hydrolocked and the water was probably in there about a week before I realized the issue. If it survived, plan on changing the oil at least 4 times to get all the water out of the system.

Ok dealer got everything figured out, sounds like sea strainer was cracked and sucking air, and one side of the motor was full of water (didnt really understand over the phone how it got full of water). Starter was also replaced. Sounds like they lake tested it and it runs great now. He said it would have been over $1000 job but he was gonna try to work it down to around $700.

Now the question is why was the sea strainer cracked? Did someone not do their job when winterizing? In that case should they be covering everything?

Another possibility is the exhaust risers...

Call me pessimistic (read my other thread about getting a new engine) but the same thing happened to my boat. The dealer drained everything, swapped the starter, etc and they ran it in the river with 0 problems. Winterized it, pulled it in the spring and dropped it in their tank to bring up to ttemp, 0 problems, I pick it up and the temp rose/hydrolocked first time out...

I guess my point is..if it's just another hour or so's worth of billing for him to pressure test the exhaust/cooling system and/or the head I would get it ton for peace of mind....

My brothers boat had similar symptoms and it was from the exhaust.

2000 20ci. The dealer did not do a water test in the fall and pickled the boat prior to your delivery. They should take care of their customer. M&M

He did say they pulled and resealed the riser.

Sounds similar to what we had happen, ours is hydro locked, but we only got 15 min on our new boat..
