Boat loses acceleration when surfing and goes into limp mode...

So I built something similar to the Delta wake gate and tried it out for the first time today and unfortunately it was a failure...

    suck gate.jpg

    Here was my set up...

Each locker had a 750 pound fat sac and a 400 pound sac in the bow walk way, 3 people in the bow and 3 evenly distributed in the boat.

The wedge stayed on great and had no problems, the wave looked great but as soon as we got to about 9 MPH the boat lost all acceleration and went into limp mode but no alarms went off, I would have to turn the boat off, start it up again but the same thing kept happening no matter where we put the wedge? When I surf with the boat just listed we have never had this problem?

Any thoughts on what is causing this would be much appreciated, I would love to surf this summer while being able to just fill the sacs once and not have to empty back and forth for regular and goofy riders.

Was this the first time out this year?

Did you try running without the wedge, just the weight?

Did you try to empty one side and run listed?

    What prop are you using?

Did you look at temps and pressures? Were they all good?

Sorry for a lot of questions but it will help in finding a solution.

Nope we have been out 3 times this year, but this was the first time using the home-made wake gate.

Yes when we took the wedge off and just ran with the sacs full the boat was fine.

Yes we ran listed the rest of the day and didn't have any problems.

Yep all temps were fine and no alarms went off, the boat just went into limp mode.

Maybe try the Acme 1433 or the 1617. I ran the 1617 on my RZR here in Denver at 5500 feet and it was great. Not sure what your elevation is where your at in Utah.

Could be a place to start.

My hunch is that you are hitting a diagnostic, something like an airflow rationality or one that is used to correlate speed and load. When the package was calibrated for that boat, it didn't run in the mode you have it in, meaning it is pulling too hard (MAP too high for too long) for what is considered normal. It also could be a fuel trim rationality, meaning you again are running it in a mode that it never was calibrated correctly for due to the extra load.

If I'm correct, a fix would be to swap props to one with less pitch.

Once you know what prop you want chpthril is your guy to get it from.

I should be getting my parts here this week to build a suckgate. I am at least 1000 feet higher than you and I am running the 1235 prop. I can let you know if I have any issues.

Yes let me know how your suckgate goes! I was really hoping that it would work, well it did, until the boat kept dying, so now I'm hoping the prop swap will help, I'm going to call my local dealer today and see if they can give me any insight on the issue.

I dont think you have a prop problem. I would get then ECM scanned for a stored code.

Thumbs up to this prop and Mike for sending it. Wakeman22 suggested I change a fuse by the battery and this seemed to cure the limp mode for me. My boat was really bad nothing I tried seemed to help until I changed the prop and the fuse. Unfortunately I did both on the same day... but it did fix it.
Here is the thread that it was discussed. So much knowledge here on this site props to all...

So my just got back from the boat shop and they plugged in the diagnostic computer and the reading that came back was low oil pressure. The weird thing is no alarms went off and I made sure to pay attention to this and the boat kept going into limp mode. He said that maybe because this was the first time I had surfed with a fully loaded back end on both sides that this caused it as well as the pressure from the suckgate? He said to add an extra quart of oil (my oil level checked out fine) as some older Malibu's he has worked on had this same problem and to use an SAE 50. So I"m going to do that and head out to try again tomorrow, I really hope this fixes it since the wake with the suckgate looked really great. Has anyone else with this boat (RZ2) seen this issue?

Pull the STBD side engine divider and see if your 07 has two oil pressure senders on a tree right above the filter. Large one works the gauge and the small one goes to the ECM. That tree and/or the opening of the sender can get gummed up with sludge and indicate a false low oil pressure. Removing the senders and tree and cleaning them out with carb cleaner will cure this.

Thanks Chpthril I'll try that before adding extra oil!!

Were you surfing on Utah Lake? If so, you were able to get a good wave there with the gate? That would be impressive. Are you putting in at the Saratoga ramp? How's the water level there?
