Not common from my experience (I owned a Direct Drive before this boat), but again, I dont believe its enough to cause concern. Yes, tippy at high speeds with empty ballast. Test drive any Z1, it wont take long to notice. Again, it's really no big deal in my opinion... but it really bothers some people.
I had a '13 Z1 and agree with the tippy comments. I contributed this mainly to the deep v hull. Compared to a flatter bottom boat, with the deep v, the hull has the ability to rock from side to side easier. For the record, the I/O boat that we had before the Z1 was also very tippy, again a deep v designed hull. Now, our little 15' Boston Whaler, which is a very flat bottom boat, this thing is extremely stable with very little movement from side to side...flat bottomed boat, no axis to rotate on. The plus of the deep v is a better ride as it breaks the waves instead of completely bouncing over them and because it is deeper in the water it displaces more water which is why Tiges and Centurions (even earlier years) can make a great surf wave....deep v hulls. I strongly consider a test drive. On the '13s the boat would tend to "chine lock", if memory serves me correctly it would just be to the right. When this happens, you can turn the wheel and the boat really will not turn, you have to back off the throttle to break the "suction" and then it will turn fine. It happened to us more at cruising speed. Best of luck....take a test drive.
I agree with Dandy. I don't notice the boat being too tippy at surf speeds, but if you empty the ballast and get it up over 20MPH, it will want to lean to one side a lot. If it is just me in the boat, I need to offset my own weight with ballast on the opposite side to run level. Fairly annoying.
That said, I've had the boat for 3 years and I intend to keep it for at least 7 more. So happy customer here. I do intend to pursue a home made surf system this fall though.
