    RZ2 Prop Shaft Seal Replacement

After de-winterizing my 2008 RZ2, heavy rains all weekend have left a few inches of water in the bilge, and it is now dripping from the prop shaft seal in the hull. I just purchased the boat at the end of last season so I'm not sure wether it was leaking then or not (the boat sat in storage for almost two years prior to me buying it). How involved is this to replace or is the something better left to a mechanic? Is it something that needs to be replaced ASAP or can I run it, and just wait until they have a spot for me in the shop? I'd like to run it on the lake just to see if there are any other issues that may have risen over the winter. I would also assume any mechanic familiar with V-drives can replace this because I don't have a local Tige' dealer.

No Tige dealer needed, any inboard dealer should be able to address shaft alignment and shaft seal.

Your shaft seal might need to be adjusted and not replaced. The dripless seal should last several hundred hours.

X2 ^^^^ had mine fire hose on me last year. Just a little bit of adjustment at a time, like 1/16" each time may take a few adjustments to get it right, but better to have a little drip then to run it dry.

its possible it just wasn't adjusted correctly. If it is the PSS seal check out these instructions for setting it up correctly.

Something must have caught between the ring and the boot, so I tried adjusting it 3/16, but it still drips. Do I replace it or let it limp through the summer?

Any helpful tips on removing the coupler from the end of the prop shaft? Removed the 1-1/8" nut from the end of the shaft and the set screw from the coupler but it will not separate from the shaft.

Likely to need a tap with a hammer and block of wood.

You could also perhaps stick a spacer inside the joint and tighten the 4 bolts to force the shaft out.

yup. take a shorter deep well socket and four longer bolts and place the socket in between the hub and the flange on the v drive. Tighten up the bolts going all the way around and it will pop off after a bit of tourqe on each one.

it takes more time to setup the socket inbetween the two..kind of a pita lol

Thanks for the help gentlemen! I purchased a longer set of bolts so I could get a decent sized socket in between and still be able to hold on to it while I clamped the coupling an the v-drive back together, it popped right off. Unfortunately when I pulled the boot ofF to change the carbon washer, I discover the lower two clamps were barely even hand tight, that was probably where it was leaking in the first place! NOTE TO SELF . . . CHECK THE TIGHTNESS OF ALL FITTINGS PRIOR TO REPLACING PARTS OR ADJUSTING PSS SEAL!!!

well now if you ever need to pull your shaft out you'll be all set

are you going to replace it while in there or try and re use the one already on there?

I'm going to do the same thing to my 21v, so this is helpful. I am replacing the bellows portion of the pss only. The kit from West Marine is $70 and it comes with new clamps and o-rings too. Thanks for the input! On mine, it seems to be simply old and compressed enough times to blow the seal when hitting the throttle, more so in reverse. You can see it squirt out between the ss ring and the bellows (not sure what it's called, but looks like a bellows to me ;-). BTW, if it is compressed too far, the seal can be broken easier since the slight alignment difference is needing to be taken up over a shorter distance!
