    Help! 2000 Tige 2100v vs. 2003 Moomba

    Hi Guys,

I've been a LONG time reader of this forum (have learned everything I know about boats from here) but I am FINALLY in the market for my first boat and need some help and opinions from the experts. I'm sorry to start another "this vs. that" thread - but the only others I could find were several years old and the boat market (especially the used market) has changed so much since then that I needed some fresh opinions.

Long story short - I am searching for a 2000 or newer, V Drive, wakeboard boat with under 500 hours...for under $20K. Given the insane prices of NEW boats these days, this is not an easy task...as the prices I'm finding today are even higher than 7-8 years ago (on the SAME boats) when I was looking then!

I've found 2 potential options - but need some help deciding.

First is a 2000 Tige 2100v. It's got the Merc 315 HP 5.7 engine (oddly it has the gray engine cover - which makes me wonder if maybe the engine was replaced?), ~370 hours, Perfect Pass, Wakeboard Tower (no speakers, no bimini), TAPS, and a newly redone interior (9 out of 10). Price is around $18K all-in.

Second is a 2003 Moomba Mobius LSV. It's got the 310 HP Indmar Assault (EFI) engine, ~470 hours, Perfect Pass, Tower, Bimini, Auto-Fill Ballast, Wake Plate, and a pretty clean, though not perfect, interior (8 out of 10). Price on this one is $17,000 all-in.

I have found other Tige 2100's - 99's and 00's for less money - as low as $15K - and am wondering if this is a fair price first, and how it compares to the Moomba second. Are there any reliability concerns with a 16 year old Merc 315? I understand the 2100 is a very heavy boat - so the wake is probably the same with the Tige "stock" as with the Moomba with tanks full - but I like the idea of the auto-fill with the Moomba and the ability to upgrade the sacks down the road.

Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated! As my first boat purchase, I'm terrified to (a) invest in something that's going to rapidly lose value over 3-5 years (as I'm sure I'll want to upgrade after getting into it) and (b) purchase something that I'm going to spend 80% of my time fixing and 20% enjoying.

    Thanks for your help!

Hey Duffy - thanks for the reply. I would probably say 60/40 wakeboard to surf. Most of the surfing will probably be when the water is rough or on trips to bigger lakes (Powell, etc.). I live in CO - not a lot of big lakes out here - so the options are pretty limited. That's another thing I forgot to mention - the boat will be used at altitude (Denver - 5000ish ft.).

Thanks! I have seen a few of those - but the hours scared me. What is the difference between a 21V and a 2100V? In the research I've done here - I found an employee of Tige stating that they're the same - but the 2100V had a different interior? The one thing I'm unsure of is the engine on this particular 2100v I'm looking at. It has a different engine cover than any of the other used boats of that year range that I'm looking at. I did confirm it's a 5.7L - and the dealer doesn't have a history on it - but I'm not sure that engine was made for that year. I'm concerned it may be a salvaged boat or something pulled off the bottom of the lake and restored. Here's a picture...engine.jpg

Assume a car averages 45 miles an hour in it's life. Thats only 45k miles on a car if it has a 1000 hours of use. You can pull engine codes and see what rpms the boat averaged. I would also do a leak down, compression test etc... If those are fine I wouldn't worry about hours too much. These are 15-16 year old boats.

If you plan on surfing don't get the moomba.

Don't know how far your willing to drive, but this one is in southwest Missouri.. I drive by it weekly and have stopped to scope it out a couple times when I had a buddy lookin at it. It's really clean other than the two corner seat cushions in the pictures... It on consignment at this dealership and the sales guy said the owner accepted an offer of $17k and the guys financing fell through..

Go with the Tige. Build quality is better and it will produce a wave you can actually surf. I had an 05 Moomba LSV and the wake was nearly impossible to surf. But my biggest gripe about that boat was how shallow the interior was. Boat felt small and it felt like I was gonna tip over all day long.

That is not a 2000 Merc 350 mag. I'd bet it's been replaced.

For god sakes, don't buy a Moomba.

It's hard to find the right 21v for 20k. It seems most are brown (mushroom) Riders Editions (cheaper interior) with the Metcraft towers. Both are negatives IMO and should drop the price down around 17-18 depending on the rest of the boat. What you should look for is for one out of California. A lot of them had the Phat towers that were far better than the Metcraft.

This one says Riders Edition but it has the Limited interior. Nice looking boat.

That thing looks nice. I was prepared to drive about 9 hours from Denver anyway...if they'd meet me somewhere, that might be doable. Any idea of the hours on that one? Doesn't say on the listing - and doesn't look like it has perfect pass (not sure about that gauge on the far left)? Also - is that the infamous metcraft tower on that one?

Thanks! Agreed - that's a great looking boat. Looks like no PP - so maybe another $1200-$1300 there - but still a decent price if they're negotiable.

Also - thanks for the info on the engine - that's what I suspected. So - I guess the million dollar question in that case is...with only 363 hours total, is a new engine a good thing or a bad thing?

The sales guy says the boat has around 600 hours on it. Its currently winterized so we didn't dig too deep into things. More of a visual, look into all the compartments and the bilge and under the boat and check over the trailer sort of stuff.. No perfect pass and no tower speakers. In boats are all alpine and the Bimini and cover are in great shape. Prop looks clean and straight with no dings and the three skeggs underneath aren't bent or anything. It is the metcraft tower but it's got the extra bracing in the insides. It's the first thing I grabbed when I walked up to the boat and it's really solid. I was impressed actually. Shook the entire boat on the trailer without any flex in the tower. I would not be scared of that tower..
Also, like I said they have it on consignment and it's been there all winter.. Sellers probly want to move it..

18k is almost reasonable if it has perfect pass, a good tower and is propped for Colorado. I had to reprop my 98 2200v when I moved here. Great power at sea level....kind of a dog at altitude. A new prob brought it back to life but I still prefer the performance at pueblo more than at grand lake.

Assuming it's ship shape and well cared for, say go for it. We love our 98 2200v. In fact, took it out today and had the lake to ourselves all morning.
