Prototype Tab

Been reading up on the new tab style surf systems and then saw some at the boat so. Got me to thinking, why not see if some type of surf tab style works better on my hull vs my NSS plate did. So started trying to figure out how to fit something under the platform (not a lot of room to work with). Trick for me is right now I want it fully removable without drilling any holes in the hull. My wife hates driving with the boat listed (even though she drives very well), so we'll see how well this does and if I can balance the boat out or maybe simi-listed and make things easier for her.

Still have to work on the attachment, the shape of the tab itself, and then some sort of adjustment on the angle.

FWIW, I've kicking around some ideas of my own. Now that I don't need my speedo pickups anymore, I have that full 18" of the flat section of hull to work with.

Here's a few pics with the NSS plate. It did give me more push and cleaned the wave up some vs not having it out.

Yes the pick up tube is in the way, but can't get rid of it just yet on mine. One of these years I will upgrade that.

Guess I should say I did make a quick Gate style before and I personally didn't like it. Was too hard to steer and created a lot of spray.

The NSS style wake looks pretty nice. It's got that glorious old DD Tige transition but with a ton of lip on it. What's the ballast set up you run with it?

Typically run:

300ish in locker (350 filled until it wont shut)
350 on surf side
2 -100# plates under rear seat
2 people on rear seat corner
1 person observer seat
then driver
Taps typically all the way up
and full gas tank especially since gas pick up tube is on the starboard side of boat, it doesn't run well on air

That was my main reason for doing my trunk conversion. I only ran it dry once but after that it was always in the back of my mind. No longer though.

So the trend with the tab set ups seems to be to have a lip on the inner and back edge and angling that back edge to push the water away from the wake. If I were designing a plate, that's what I'd be looking at doing. With the Starboard (or whatever material you are using there) you could do some shaping of the inner lip to help that flow a little smoother than the tabs out there now. Just a thought.

Not trying to derail this thread but I'm just curious as to how you mounted your NSS plate.

I figure on the inside edge I would put some kind of lip on it not 100% sure just yet. Was going to leave the angled back one off for now due to making sure I don't put too much pressure on it since its a simple mount onto the boat vs being fully bolted on. I've only screwed the hinges on to the plastic for now as a safety incase the pressure is too much it should rip the screws out of the plastic and not hurt the back of my boat any.

On the NSS plate there is a welded on stud that goes through the R-Pin hole of the platform mount and put a nut on the other side. Then a U bolt clamps the flat strap to the support under the swim platform. If I can remember I'll get a picture tonight.

The ram will either be some sort of turn buckle or sliding tube/rod for now. If it all works well I'd probably buy a Bennet trim tab set up and then modify the plate.

My wife does a really good job of driving, but its still on my list of upgrades to do along with a new prop to handle the weight a little better. But just finished a new house so maybe next year. For now just tinker with different plate/tab ideas around and run it as is.

Going to be trying out some real waves soon, headed to Maui for little vac. Should be fun I hope. I've tried enough versions of surfing, (wake surfing, body boarding, wind surfing, and Flowrider) time to try the real thing. Course then its going to make me really ready for summer to get here.
