    Ouch!

    Can save $300 here ($955)

They also might be able to reflash it if its just a corrupt board.

Can anyone tell me why it would be a bad idea to convert it over to a auto harness/ecu? This was just a mid 90's chevy engine. The ecu would need a tune to remove some items and make it a manual transmission engine if it wasn't already. After that, the engine doesn't care what its spinning. I build custom chevy harnesses, so in my mind that's not hard to do, and I have a local guy that does my tuning, so that's easy as well. All these parts could be sourced from a junk yard and cost next to nothing.
Actually, maybe you just need a car ecu from a junkyard. I don't know if they are different. Then it would just be tuning.

      What am I missing?

There was an owner that did something like that. I think it was an older boat though?

Can you post a picture of your bad ecu? I'd almost bet money it just a normal gm ecu. If that is the case, you would need to run a power, two grounds and a serial data wire to an obd 2 port. That serial data wire is already coming out of their ecu/ diagnostic port so you would just need to tap into it. Then you can use a standard obd reader to troubleshoot. Come to think of it, we should all be able to do that. Go cut a obd plug out of a junkyard car and wire it in. In theory it should work fine. I think I'll add that to my list.

If you mean standard as in same as thier cars, no, it's an ECU custom sources by their marine/aftermarket group. GM has need doing this for a couple decades.

The ecu on the right is an e67 from cars/trucks from about the mid 2000's to around now. So GM is starting to come around.

As for the other two, they are not gm. At least the boxes aren't. I can't believe that Merc programmed their own system, but I could see them repackaging it.

It shared case and connectors with the E67, but some different internals, and obviously not SW. You can't take an E67 and flash the marine SW.

Do you know what the internals are that are different, or how to find out? Maybe an ecu pin out for a marine E67? I'd be really interested in seeing what's different, as I figured once my engine dies, I'd replace it with a car LS3. I wouldn't try to flash in a marine tune, but keep it the car tune.

Would this ECM work? It looks the exact same as the one I have

Thanks Stingreye. That is the best description of the different styles and their specifics I have ever read. I have a much better understanding of how each component works and how the manipulations of the parameters works. I also now understand why the OBDII scanners will not work yet now understand what the do when hooked up. With those diagrams one should be able to trouble shoot the computer to test if it is performing as it should. I can see why the computer diagnostic and tuning tools are a must.

It's been over a decade so I don't remember the specifics. I know that E67 was designed for global use which brought some specific anti-theft requirements. In the EU, it was common to steal cars by putting in an ECM that didn't have security so to meet their insurance requirements there couldn't be a generic ECU available that could plug in and run the engine bypassing security.
