New sea strainer/flush kit from Indmar

Saw this today on one of the Facebook Sponsor adds: http://www.indmar.com/company/news/1...g_Product.aspx

Any idea when this will be available?? Couldn't find anything on their site. I just spent some coin buying some bronze fittings to install my own. Tempted to take them back if this thing is released aftermarket soon.

Here is a link to order. I didn't search many other sites but this was my first find. Its $103 at Bakes. I am for sure getting one.

Just looking at the picture, I question the design a bit. If I understand it right, the 90* end connects to the bulkhead fitting in my hull, which turns the unit so it's parallel to the hull, pointing towards my transmission, which gets raw water first. If the picture is any indication of the unit properly put together, the hose connection will always be pointing down, towards the hull. You will never be able to put the garden hose on the hose connector. The 90* elbow either needs to swivel independently of the screw on cap or at least make the elbow a straight barb like the other side so you can rotate the entire unit to get the garden hose fitting pointing straight up.

Yes in the literature it says the inlet can be rotated 360°.
I bought one last night and will be installing it at the end of March when I see my baby again. I will post pics.

Hopefully that is the case. The picture makes it look like the inlet and the cap are one piece. If that is the case, the inlet can technically still be rotated 360*, but you may or may not be able to point the inlet where you want it and have the cap be on tight.

So after a month and a few days my Indmar pro-strainer arrived. Bakes or UPS lost the initial order but regardless Bakes was not prompt in correcting and getting me a another. Unfortunately it didn't show up till after my boat working weekend (boat is 4 hrs away). I won't be ordering from them again.

Initial thoughts are I wish I hadn't ordered it. There are no check valves so you have to have a sea **** or ball valve inboard of the pro-strainer. Well if I have to buy that I would have just used a cheaper Sherwood sea strainer, tee and female hose connector. It will look different than other strainers/flush systems but I can honestly say it's not any better.

So, just to be clear from what you are saying you would need to put a ball valve before the black 90 on the top to stop back flow? If that's the case yes, that doesn't make sense that you wouldn't potentially have something built in.

Correct, without the ball valve between strainer (black 90) and hull of boat your winterization wouldn't work and you would get real wet if cleaning out strainer while boat in water.

I felt scammed on this one. The marketing is slick and the retailers need to add some "fine print" about what's needed. I don't mind spending more than a DIY project due to ease of installation but now I am paying even more and installation is about same as DIY.

Ya that sucks. I suppose we needed a guinea pig to check it out and test. I thank you for your sacrifice none the less.

Maybe im misunderstanding this thing. Isn't the idea to plug your garden house into it and use that water pressure to clean out the strainer? If that's the case, you would need a valve on the clear side, at least, and maybe in addition to one on the other side. Say your strainer is plugged and you hook up your hose. The path of least resistance will send the water the other way, unless you have a valve there to block it and force it out the hull.

I think there are a few points missed. The raw water inlet is the black elbow, your boat should have a shut off on the raw water inlet through-hull fitting, if not get one installed. The elbow appears to be sealed with an O-Ring so that is can be positioned as desired. The garden hose connection is to hook up and flush the system (not the filter), this would allow the garden hose to be hooked up to run the boat on the trailer or to flush the system if used in salt/brakish water. To me it looks like it functions exactly as advertised in the original link. Not sure where the confusion is.
"I think I am pretty smart for an idiot"

Ok this project finally completed. Takes me a long time with my boat so far away.

Here are some pics. I had to install it vertically to room for the added ball valve and barb fittings. Unfortunately my boat didn't come with a shutoff valve. The vertical install was also due to the 90° elbow inlet on the strainer. The flush inlet is pointing toward the port side locker but after looking at it I am going to spin it so its pointing towards the tranny. This way I can connect hose without taking storage wall out.
After what I spent on the strainer, valve and fittings I wouldn't go this route again. The DIY systems I have seen posted would have been same amount of work but less expensive. Also would make less of a mess. If you notice the strainer opens from bottom. So when I go to clean it out all the crud inside will fall out into the bilge. This would not happen with the sea strainers.
Hope this provides some insight to a new product.

I'll have to take a picture of mine this weekend. Pretty sure it is installed 180 degrees from your setup, making the basket much more useable @Captainkurk72.
