Trading up from a R20

I am thinking about trading up from my R20 to a Supreme S238. My goal is to get the best surf wake possible on a working mans budget. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated or recomendations on how to make my R20 wave comparable to a bigger boat.

Im not sure a bigger boat necessarily means a better wave.

What is your current setup?

Have you considered the new 22ft Tige thats a base level version of the RZ2 but same hull? Damn fine surf wave there.

Or the R21 which is the base Z1. We had a Z1 and were pleased with the wave. I think the jump to the S238 would be an extreme jump unless you have a huge crew that you bring out. I agree with above, bigger boat doesn't mean better wave. Do a search for SquidWakes on here. I believe he ran/runs an R20 and is known to be one of the best waves in that 20' class

I currently have a 1100lbs pound bag in the port side and a 750lbs. bag in the starboard side. My local Tige dealer switched to Supreme and Centurion a few years ago so I haven't seen the R22 in person. The Tige's they had at the boat were nice but they are starting to get out of my comfort range in price. Maybe I'm just having big boat envy.

So out of that 1100 and 750, how are you setting up the boat for surfing? Any bow weight?

Nothing negative to say about a supreme just by crawling around one, Never had a chance to get one on the water. If you still have a Tige dealer in the area, go check out the new R22. Its a no frills RZ2 so its going to be comparable to a Supreme in that regard.

x2 on the R22, i have surfed behind one and it is pretty slick. All the running gear and space of the RZ2 and the price tag that is still pretty comfortable.

I only surf regular so I fill the 1100lbs. bag as full as the locker allows, probably 800lbs. and the bow full 400lbs. My speed is around 11.8 and taps at 4. The wave is okay but it just feels like I need more. I go about 230lbs. and it would be nice to fall back further in the wave and still be able to catch back up. Do any of those new aftermarket wave shaping devices work? Or are they just gimmicks?

You have vx? In any case, I'd say slow down. Most our regular riders go from 10.2-11.0 max. Taps 4-5. And usually only fill surf side in front.

For a less steep wave if desired we add about 2-300lb to front surf side.

In our RZR we fill the front 400 full and we have the W004 bags which gives us about 750 on top of the 250 hard tank. We ride at 10.6 o 10.8 regular and 11 mph goofy, goofy likes a little more speed. I keep taps at about 2, sometimes I can get away with 3. This allows the wake to have some length. With the heavy weight in the back the RZR or R20 face can get vertical real quick. At the speeds of 11.8 no matter where my taps was I would lose all push in the wave. Here are some examples of my wave with the ballast setup and taps location I talked about. The second picture is with standard surf ballast, an extra 400 lbs on the floor and 4 adults at 10.8 mph. This is another owners old boat in Denver. You tube video below is from before the W004 was installed but the weight is very close to what is was in this picture, just done with other bags and not one. I have a surf flap made out of horse stall mat installed in the fist picture and both videos. For a 20 foot hall the R20 and RZR are phenomenal but it's a 20 foot boat so it has limitations.
